There was and is a bunker under the White House and Washington, DC. The one you mention is the main MILITARY one. The SUBMARINE story I can no longer verify because I read about it 20 years ago.
The last I heard, the Neutron Bomb was proscribed by public outcry in the 1970s, though you are correct, that does not mean we do not have it.

1- There is no bunker under the White House. No structure designed by man could provide any protection against the multiple warheads that would be targeted on the Capitol. And the shelter that I refered to is explicitly intended for political leaders, not military.
2- As I mentioned, the submarine model story has been covered on this website before. Check the Archives. Not the postings archives, but the archives listing the columns written by Cecil Adams. The spying thing is an Urban Legend. I don’t care where you “heard it”.

Hmmm… well it would appear that my plan to cause a ‘debate’ succeeded beyond my best projections (in the words of a true scientist).
I appreciate that despite the fact that this (fairly heated) debate has brought useful information into the open, things can get a bit out of hand. You can still argue, just be a bit more… erm… ‘diplomatic’ about it, please???
I would be very surprised if there was a bunker under the Whitehouse for several reasons:
i)It is (the Whitehouse, that is) probably the primary target for the better part of China & Russias nukes
ii)It would be the first place that everyone would flock to if they thought there was going to be a nuke strike (to try and get to cover)
iii)The government knows that a direct hit from multiple nukes would simply vapourise their bunker, so they’re not likely to put it on a primary target city site like Washington DC anyway
Then again, they could have put it there just for the convenience… but I doubt it.
I like the idea of secrets being given away by toy makers… if only for the irony… but I doubt that any true secrets would be allowed out of the country in something so obvious.
Oh and daniel p bostaph - you are right about the neutron bomb, except that it still left loads of fallout in the immediate area around ground zero and in the upper atmosphere (I think).
Besides, I’m sure that the military have concocted much more effective ways of generating mass destruction now than the ‘N-bomb’.

I think we got off on the wrong fork a while back. I believe the OP was in the vein of ‘why does the gov’t keep information classified after xx time’ which evolved into military secrets and the like.
We all know that there are things which should be kept secret, from stealth fighters to the actual receipe of Coca Cola. I think (feel free to correct me) what the OP was getting as is why there is/are still docs from the government concerning non-military stuff that are still locked up? What kind of weirdness were some of the presidents into where we have to lock down files for 100 years? Did Abe Lincoln have some bizarre opium-leather-and-whores thing going on that would destroy the fabric of the country?
Additionally, if there were aliens, I wouldn’t tell anyone, just because I don’t think world citizenry would deal with it very well. Would there be widespread panic? Would religions break down? I think the discovery of actual aliens would make the whole Y2K thing look insignificant in comparison.
There’s a conspiracy theory for ya-the ‘X-Files’, ET, and all these other shows are mentally conditioning us for the revealing of aliens…grin
PS: For what it’s worth, it wasn’t a sub, it was either the YF-22 or YF-23 that turned into a model. But, it turned out okay, because it was the one the military didn’t select…g

funny thing is, most of the conspiray theories are true… i should know, i worked there. most whacky shit is true… X-files UNDERSTATES reality so badly that the truth scares people. So its left hidden cause humans would be scared of what REALITY is these days.

One utterly pervailing reason why the Gov’t would cover up an alien crash at Roswell would be to glean as much knowledge of the alien tech as possible. I wouldn’t tell anyone. Would you? There was an article in the local alternative paper almost 10 years ago about tests on US civilians using directed energy weapons to sicken and destabalize the targets. Written by a member of Veterans of the American Intelligence Community. I wrote and they sent me a packet of info. Under the tape(Lots of Tape!) were hairs. I think it was a spy trick but not sure…
