Government shutdown watch fall 2023 edition

It’s all that Hastert Rule bullshit. If McCarthy dares to get a bill passed that is only possible with the support of the Democrats, the motion to vacate will proceed with the speed of light.

That’s what makes McCarthy’s whining about whose fault the debt ceiling fiasco is especially annoying. He has a bill, right now, crafted in the Senate, that would pass today if he put it up for a vote.

I feel the same way, I haven’t been following the Republican demands too closely but I’m really surprised that it seems to be coming down to Ukraine. Like, I get that America First types don’t want us to be involved in foreign wars, and I get that we as a country have a pretty dismal record here. But there’s broad NATO support for Ukraine and I never expected this to be the hill that they’d die on.

It really only makes sense if they’re Russian agents.

Or if their voters have been propaganda-ized to be “useful idiots” in favor of the Russian agenda.

Of course “Both of the above” is also a distinct possibility.

I agree. And it started with Trump trying to extort Zelenskyy. Trump is the top traitor.

The longer that McCarthy is SOTH, the more he reminds me of Neville Chamberlain, except Chamberlain was more successful playing the appeasement game.

Bullwinkle: Hey Rocky! Watch me pull an appeasement out of my hat!
Rocky: But that trick never works …
Bullwinkle: Presto! Yank. Rooowwwr Chomp Chomp!!1!!1!!!. Face eaten by leopards … again.

Rocky: “And now, here’s something we doubt you’ll really like.”

Not so; they’re generally the same people screaming “bomb the brown people, er, Mexican cartels”.

'Zactly. They’re quite in favor of killing. As long as the right people are being killed. For their seriously misguided definition of “the right people.”

The House passed something. I’m not into the weeds of it yet, but it was bipartisan, stiffed Ukraine, and didn’t contain any obvious poison pills that I saw at a cursory glance. Kevin actually put something up that Democrats voted in favor of. Now he’s toast.

In a 335-91 vote, the House passed a continuing resolution that would fund the government for 45 days. Applause and cheers broke out on the House floor after the vote. One Democrat and 90 Republicans voted against the bill.

The short-term funding bill includes disaster relief funds, an extension of a federal flood insurance program and FAA reauthorization — but no Ukraine aid. The Senate must pass the bill before 12:01 a.m. Sunday to avert a government shutdown.

I’ll be damned, he actually did it.

Expect Gaetz to file that motion to vacate on Monday.

Or not. The only problem with a bluff is that some day you may be challenged to wheel it out onto center stage light the fuze.

If Gaetz can triangulate that this wasn’t quite bad enough, he keeps the threat to use again next week.

It’s upsetting that it stiffed Ukraine. But I think it’s HUGE that McCarthy used Dem votes for the first time to bypass the nutcase caucus.

I assume that McCarthy will immediately face a motion to remove him. It’ll be really interesting to see how that plays out.

Gaetz explicitly threatened that if Kevin passed anything with the Democrats’ support that he’d file to vacate the chair immediately. Meanwhile there is credible reporting that Gaetz himself is meeting with Democrats to try and get their support for a new Speaker. Just hypocrisy on top of lies on top of threats on top of dysfunction on the R side of the House.

Absolutely! I was pleasantly shocked.

How bizarre. Why would Dems support any Speaker further into nutcase territory than McCarthy?

Really. I’d love to hear that sell job.

https://www.cnn.com/2023/09/29/politics/democrats-matt-gaetz-mccarthy-speakership/index.html

“In the last 48 hours, he’s not just talking to Democrats. I’m talking about like, the furthest left most progressive Democrats to moderates,” the House Democrat told CNN. “He’s a salesman right now.”

Asked about working with Democrats on his McCarthy ouster effort, Gaetz said: “The subject has come up, but it’s not my focus.”

Of course if the price of Dem support is rescinding the rule that gives Gaetz and the Hard-core Frothing Wacko Caucus a de facto veto on the speakership, then we’d have a real horse race here.

If Gaetz like hardball so much let’s watch him play defense against it.

Is Manchin the lone nay vote on the D side?

Manchin is not in the House. The Senate hasn’t voted yet.
