Government shutdown watch fall 2023 edition

I hope the Dems find a way to play this that doesn’t exactly give McCarthy a blanket endorsement, but lends support to any continuing effort to marginalize the lunatics and end their disproportionate influence. Gaetz is surely panicking that the Freedom Caucus could get completely hobbled if McCarthy has decided to govern like an adult and compromise somewhat on policy, asking for Dem votes when he needs them.

Oh duh. sorry for being so ignorant.

I saw that the lone D represents a district with a large Ukrainian population.

That makes sense.

If I were more internet savvy, I’d post the Hulk “ I see this as an absolute win” meme. Yes the Ukraine aid stinks, but I’m sure the DOD can shuffle around some funds to keep the war effort supported for 45 days.

Meanwhile, this is an absolute break between McCarthy and his hard right. There’s no mending this. I wouldn’t be surprised if McCarthy has already cut a deal with Jeffries on the inevitable motion to vacate the chair.

No, it was a Rep from a heavily Ukrainian district who objected to the removal of Ukraine aid. Which I don’t blame him for standing on his principles.

I think the whole “screw Ukraine” thing was meant to be a trap for Democrats in the House and the Senate. The rest of the bill was completely normal and reasonable, so if a majority of Ds rejected it solely because the Republicans are stiffing our allies and giving aid and comfort to Russia, then the Rs could prance and preen and declare that Democrats would rather “starve good, hardworking Americans than stop funding other people’s wars” or some similar nonsense.

And once again the Freedom Caucus sits sputtering on the sideline dumbfounded that their strategy of pissing off everyone didn’t get them exactly what they wanted.

Always make sure no security camera is watching you before you “accidentally” pull a fire alarm.

If deliberate that was an exceedingly stupid thing to do.

Stupid, but also stupid:

And fellow New York Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, a Republican, said on X that she’ll introduce a resolution to expel Bowman from the House over the incident. “This is the United States Congress, not a New York City high school. This action warrants expulsion & I’m introducing a resolution to do just that,” she wrote.

Bowman’s office acknowledged he pulled the alarm, but suggested it was unintentional.

“Congressman Bowman did not realize he would trigger a building alarm as he was rushing to make an urgent vote,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “The Congressman regrets any confusion.”

That is some serious weak-ass excuse making. Totally inappropriate, and absent some remarkable new information emerging, I hope he gets the book thrown at him.

On the contrary, I hope that this is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law–again, barring some remarkable new information that demonstrates his actions were not in bad faith.

You think he should be expelled over this? Why?

Committing a criminal act in order to delay the function of congress is not something I think we should let off gently.

As near as I can tell, it is a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail. But there may be a different law that applies to federal buildings, and there may be a law that applies to the specific intentions.

Consequences, fine, but the only reasons why a member has ever been expelled from Congress is treason or bribery.

Serious question, what historical presidents are there for this kind of shenanigans, assuming that’s what it is?

Once at my high school a 60ish teacher was flirting with a 60ish librarian, leaned his hand against the wall, and somehow accidentally pulled the fire alarm. That was a pretty hilarious accident.

This article has a screenshot of Bowman pulling the alarm. No accident was involved

Bowman’s office said it was an accident, and the congressman told reporters later Saturday: “I was trying to get to a door. I thought the alarm would open the door and I pulled the fire alarm to open the door by accident.”

Okay, wow.

Not knowing anything about what all the security door controls look like in teh House, that might, almost, be an imaginable brain fart for somebody in a hurry while thinking mostly about something else.

OTOH, if the door controls look nothing like that …

Between Menendez, Feinstein, and now Bowman (did I miss anyone?), the Ds are shooting themselves in the foot left and right here. Now’s not the time for any of that crap. There’s never a good time, but this next 18 months is an extra bad one.

So we fund the government for 45 days. Oooooh. I agree, it’s better than a shutdown. But funding the government for 45 days is pathetic. When you wonder why young people today don’t give a shit about politics, remember the adults in the house chamber who think they just got something done.
45 days. A fucking joke.
