Why should our government tell us the truth? They rarely do but would it ever be on the plus side for them if they did? What kind of world would we be living in if the government always told us the truth about national and international affairs, wars, economies etc.?

Because if the government didn’t tell us the truth, assuming you had a system with free speach/press, the truth would come out, and people would vote the lying government officials out. Assuming people cared about the level of governent lying, of course. The government will spin and manipulate the truth, just enough to try to get as many votes as possible in the current system.
If the government suppressed the truth activitly, it would require a very oppressive government - see life under the Soviet Union, or North
Korea, for examples of this.
If the government always told the truth, and in the most unbiased way possible, I suspect for your average westerner, things would be only mildly different; most of the truth is already out there, you just have to dig for it now.
If they told the truth? They wouldn’t be able to lie, cheat and steal, so therefore we would have no more politicans.
