Governor Jerry Brown signs assisted suicide bill.

Oh, silly misinformed and misguided people.

I know what’s best for you better than you do.

You say you are gay? Why, that’s preposterous. I’m not gay so therefore you can’t be either, and it is beneath the dignity of me and all of humanity for me to allow you to be gay and have that be okay. We must forever remind you that you are not fully human with the same rights as me, and that you are a wretch that will burn forever and ever, because a magic book told me so. By the way, you’re sick and evil and twisted, and if we allow you to get married, it will make our marriages bad, because then they will be contaminated by the gay. We know what’s best for you and all the rest of society, which is to conform to our beliefs even if you don’t share them. Marriage is sacred to me!

What, you say you didn’t consent to sex and don’t want a child? Poor dears, there’s a plan for you and it involves having that baby. Sure, right now it is a brainless speck of goo, but there’s value contained inside of it that I place as more valuable than your right to decide what happens inside of your own body, and whether you procreate involuntarily. I know you’re thinking all those selfish and cowardly thoughts about wanting freedom and dignity, but we simply can’t have that. Someone has to stand up and be morally *righteous *and defend those cluster of cells from your murderousness. Each one of them is a smiling fully formed baby, and every sperm is sacred. Contraceptives are also tools of the devil. Every year you should get pregnant, as long as your uterus can develop a child, if you desire sexual contact, your only option is to get married to a member of the opposite sex, have lots of unprotected intercourse, and have a child every time it can possibly happen, or else you hate Jesus. And if someone should violate you, it’s your obligation to turn your body into an unpaid day care center for someone who broke inside you and left their grossness. Why? Because I know what’s best for you and your body better than you do. I can make laws that ensure that your own body doesn’t belong to you, and you have no say as to what happens inside of it! Because I’m a moral human being, and I am protecting the holy spirits trapped inside those fertilized eggs, against you murderous she-devils. Life is sacred to me!

And what is all this I’m hearing about assisted suicide? Pshaw. That needs to be a crime, and those who do this should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law! Sure, an able-bodied person with money and no criminal record can go out and buy a gun and easily end their own lives, and I will do absolutely nothing with my faux moral righteousness to stop those folks from exercising their freeeeeeedoms, but if you’re literally trapped in a hospital bed, slowly dying in pain and agony, and can’t afford a gun, can’t go out and buy one, and can’t lift it to your temple and pull the trigger, I am going to try to make laws which take away your ability to make the same decisions I can! Because I respect and honor your life more than you do, and I know what’s best for you more than you, because Life is sacred to me!

I am the Moral Crusader, brave superhero of the internets and the In Real Lifes.

I know other people have different opinions than me, but they should not be able to govern their own lives without me being able to tell them that they have no say in how their lives should go!

I know better than you, for I am morally superior, and you are all just garbage with eyes.

Aren’t I just the bestest human being ever? Can I have my gold star now, mister Jesus?

Well-constructed, and I’m sure it applies to SOMEONE, but unless I am mistaken, the only one of those attitudes thatSmapti answers to is the assisted suicide one. AIUI, he’s actually an atheist.

Wait, we’re supposed to eat people after they’ve self-euthanized? I was not informed.

We were saving that for your birthday.

And we’ll be saving you for someone else’s birthday.

“There’s good eatin on one of those”

Thank you governor Brown.

Interesting event going on in Oregon, involves a child and her decision to die.

As an atheist, I think the heaven nonsense is smoke that clouds the issue, however, the parents appear to have made a rational well thought out decision to let their daughter die.

She is not going to get better and she is never going to have a “normal” life, whatever that means. Making a four-year old child live a life off hell because you can’t deal with reality is just evil. I applaud them for facing a hard truth.

Agreed. On all points. The “heaven” stuff makes me uncomfortable, because I don’t know that I believe in it, and I think that at the level a 4 year old is likely to understand it, she probably thinks she’s going to wake up healthy at Disneyworld. But I’m glad they’re going to refrain from torturing the poor child until her inevitable death.

Modern medicine has made many things possible. That doesn’t mean they should always be used.

Edit: And these kinds of decisions get made every day. They’re just usually private decisions between patients, families, their doctors and hospital ethics committees. They’re usually not written about in the media, due to privacy laws. It was this family’s decision to go public, which they may or may not regret at this point.

And they said assisted suicide wouldn’t be a slippery slope to involuntary euthanasia and organ harvesting.

This girl has no understanding of what death is. She can’t possibly, because she’s been lied to by her parents about what death is and what happens to you when you die (I.e. absolutely nothing, ever again). She’s not mature enough to make a free choice, and she’s been groomed into this by the people who are supposed to be looking out for her.

This is simply disgusting and you should all be ashamed of yourselves for allowing this to happen.

This child that you do not know and will never meet-How much pain would you have her go through before finally dying just to “win” this particular case?

Wow, this has absolutely nothing to do with assisted suicide. They simply have refused treatment. Different animal altogether.

Why don’t we at least give her the opportunity to live until she’s old enough to understand what death is - as opposed to the understanding of a 4-year-old who lacks the intellectual maturity to understand the concept of death even if she hadn’t been lied to about a supernatural afterlife - instead of shrugging our shoulders, declaring “at least she won’t be in pain”, and standing by while her parents kill her?

This is the slippery slope that we were assured earlier in the thread was never going to happen. This isn’t compassion, this is murder.

She is dying, you sick fuckwad-she just gets to live long enough to feel pain.

We’re all dying.

Just when you think he can’t sink any lower…:smack:

But we’re not all living/dying with chronic intractable pain, or illnesses that cannot be cured, or conditions that render us unable to do much of anything for ourselves.

There are DIFFERENCES and nuances, no matter how much you insist on denying them.

You must have a different definition. No one is killing her. The disease is killing her. People have a right to refuse treatment. Parents have a right to make that decision for their minor children.

I get that you don’t like. I’m not sure it’s the decision that I would make. But calling it murder is hyperbolic.

Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends

If she is denied treatment, she will die. A deliberate act that causes the death of an innocent is murder (in an ethical sense, if not a legal one).

Parents have the duty to protect their children. They do not have the right to kill them. Does a Jehovah’s Witness have the right to let their child die rather than receive a blood transfusion?

That’s exactly what it is. We’re talking about murdering a child. If you’re OK with a society where children are murdered because they’re sick, then have the courage to say so instead of hiding behind platitudes.
