This is a pretty good article about the ATF’s National Tracing Center, the place where they try to match a gun used in a crime with the person who bought it. It’s from last year, but they are reposting due to the Las Vegas shootings. Pretty interesting what they have to go through because they are not allowed to have computerized records.
Mind-boggling article. A squad of dedicated people working night and day, getting the job done despite having their hands tied behind their backs by Congress.
When the article mentioned gun sellers keeping their records on toilet paper in protest, it made me wonder what happens when someone from the Tracing Center calls such a store. I can’t imagine such a store owner being cooperative – and certainly not polite – when someone from the hated (to them) BATFE calls to obtain information that they think the gub’mint has no business having.
