“Before the phones start ringing and others stop dropping in, you’ll be surprised at how much you can accomplish.”

The Time Trap, by Alec Mackenzie.

This was the fourth book I picked up. The other three were very technical, and had charts and graphs and not enough words!

“Success.”

From The Magicians, by Lev Grossman.

Yeah, try playing it in a bookstore!

“It grants you a +2 circumstance bonus on Appraise checks involving any item that is small or highly detailed, such as a gem.”

D&D 3rd edition player’s handbook, which just happened to be on top in a box of old books right next to my computer desk. There were actually a few computer game manuals on my desk but none of them had 111 pages.

“There was a lot of good-natured joshing, slapping of hands, and kidding around between them and the Friends of Theo, but little conversation.”

Murder in Amsterdam: The death of Theo van Gogh and the limits of Tolerance, Ian Buruma.

The closest book at hand – Elements of Style – didn’t have 111 pages, so I went with the runner-up, Baudolino by Umberto Eco:

It’s a good thing Baudolino was just a bit closer than Sipser’s Introduction to the Theory of Computation, or I would have been stuck with “Thus the current state, next input symbol read, and top symbol of the stack determine the next move of a pushdown automaton.” :stuck_out_tongue:

“The expression of the genetic information stored in DNA involves the translation of a linear sequence of nucleotides into a co-linear sequence of amino acids in proteins.”

Molecular biology of the cell, 3rd edition.

I actually don’t know where this book came from. I’m currently hiding from the rest of the lab, using a desk in the unused lab next door which has become everyone’s overflow space. Which also means its where everyone dumps their unwanted junk. I found it hiding behind a pile of old buffers.

“When they left the building the wind blew so fiercely that speech was impossible until they reached the shelter of the car” - Evelyn Waugh, Unconditional Surrender.

What do I win?

Alice could see, as well as if she were looking over their shoulders, that all the jurors were writing down “Stupid things!” on their slates, and she could even make out that one of them didn’t know how to spell “stupid,” and that he had to ask his neighbour to tell him.

The Annotated Alice, Lewis Carroll, ed. Martin Gardner

Oh hey, I read that book for a course I took. How are you liking it? (assuming you’re reading it since it’s the book closest to you right now?)

Non-fiction - “The Grand Isle was a popular place, partly because it has that neat flatiron space overlooking the Bow River and partly because it had good contemporary Hong Kong cuisine.” - “My Favourite Restaurants in Calgary & Banff,” John Gilchrist

Novel - “His stomach is slightly plump, and there is a fair amount of chest hair and even hair on his abdomen.” - “Slant,” Greg Bear

(We missed the good stuff by one sentence. )

“She wondered what could be wrong, and thought about the brainstorming conversations she had had with Li Mei.”

If I only Changed the Software, Why Is the Phone on Fire? Technical Mysteries for Engineers by Lisa Simone

The only book within reach is the 2010 California Public School Directory. The 11th entry on page 111 is Lemoore Elementary School in Lemoore (Los Angeles County).

Но потом все встали на свои места.

(That’s if I’ve counted the full stops correctly - some of the sentences in this particular book, ‘Gastarbeiter’ by Eduard Bagirov, are disgustingly long).

“All right, we’ll try that”

Last Breath, by Mariah Stewart.

…Drat, I was hoping for something a little more thought provoking.

The interval between the time the water is introduced at the mixer and the time when the truck discharges the mix into the forms must not be longer than 1 1/2 hours

“Basic construction techniques for houses and small buildings simply explained”
Prepared by the bureau of naval personnel

It was closest.

“Filled with consternation or dismay”

p111 of Webster’s Nith New Collegiate Dictionary (the word is astonied if you are curious).

Two books were equidistant from me, so I posted both.

“A wide plain spread out beneath them, bare and brown, its flatness here and there relieved by long, low hummocks.”

“Finally, we extract the sname column from Temp2.”

The first was “A Game of Thrones”, George R.R. Martin. The second was “Database Management Systems”, Third Edition, Ramakrishnan and Gehrke.

From my bookshelf to my right, at arm’s length:

“The nest is situated at the extreme end of the tunnel and is lined with soft feathers and grasses.”
Handbook of Nature Study by Anna Botsford Comstock.

Eu (nao) gusto de sadomasoquismo. – * HOT! International Gay*

…I had it out for research purposes. Or something.

“Then I proffered you more courtesy”

Old Hec’s Idolatry in The Complete Poetical Works of James Whitccomb Riley

I’m in my studio where I keep poetry and reference works. This is the book nearest where I sit.
