OK, that makes more sense.
IANAD but I don’t think it’s as linear as that. On the calculator I cited, I used 8 oz of 80 proof (40%) alcohol, consumed in 2 hours, 4 year old female weighing 40 lbs, “cheap date” (a light drinker in other words). It spit out 0.656% as the BAC. That’s not three more ounces, it’s seven. If I change the alcohol to 100 proof (50%) alcohol, it shows 0.825%.
This calculator gives 0.61% and .76%
You know, I posted that from my phone, and I had no problems on that, but from my desktop, I am having issues. I do have some sort of adblocker on my phone and AdBlock on my desktop.
Here’s an archive.org cache of the page, which seems to work for me:
I’m just running uBlock Origin and Privacy Badger, on Firefox.
I don’t see why it wouldn’t be linear. And if the grandmother was forcing the girl to drink, it was probably consumed in less that 2 hours.
Someone uptread said they didn’t believe the story because the girl would have passed out at 0.40 BAC, so she couldn’t have drunk enough to get to 0.68. If someone weighs 40 pounds (and that’s only an average, this girl could have been smaller) they don’t have to drink much to have a significant increase in BAC. By my back-of-the-envelope calculation, just three ounces of undigested liquor in her stomach when she passed out, could have raised her blood alcohol content to 0.68 before she died.
Using the first calculator, I tried 4 oz alcohol in 15 minutes and got .42 BAC with 100 proof, or .336 BAC with 80 proof.
That site also calculates how long it will take to sober up. For the 80 proof it says:
You can legally drive (BAC < 0.08%) in 25.6 hours
You will be completely sober in 33.6 hours
Change the weight to 140 lbs, like an adult, and BAC is .094$%
You can legally drive (BAC < 0.08%) in 1.4 hours
You will be completely sober in 9.4 hours
If I input 8 oz with 15 minutes, 40 lbs, it shows 0.674%. That’s not very different from the .656% over two hours.
AIUI the body only burns it off so fast, so if she sipped it it’s not that different from slamming shots. Each shot gets in line to be processed,so to speak.
Sounds to me like grandma was monumentally stupid rather than actively malicious. She thought she was showing "tough love’ but was so stupid she didn’t realise that for a kid of that size and weight, even a few gulps let alone half a bottle is enough to kill them. And that they can easily drink enough to kill them well before passing out.
When I was a kid (maybe 10 or so?) two boys stole a bottle of whiskey and went to a relatively secluded outdoor location to drink it. They were well known as outstandingly stupid. They dared one another to drink large amounts. They both fell unconscious. They only lived because someone saw them lying on the ground and called an ambulance. Afterwards we heard they had enough alcohol in their stomachs to kill them, had they not received intervention.
Seems like every trouble in the human condition is just a facet of this gem.
Very likely the case.
In one book, they talked about the “bucket”-a punishment for boys caught smoking at camp. The malefactor was forced to stand with a bucket over his head and smoke a whole pack, very fast, one after another.
Apparently this worked. However the situation here is considerable different. Instead of a 14yo, you have a 4 yo and something which is obviously dangerous.
I am not quite into the “off with their heads camp” of the OP, but this has to be fully prosecuted.
Good cite. Note that after reading, they wanted a subscription to read any more articles. Not that I wanted to anyway.
There’s an archived version I posted later that should not nag you to subscribe. For some reason, I didn’t get the subscription nags on my phone.
I vote for the Laverne-and-Shirley treatment: Shot before a live audience.
