I ran into her after watching Jenna Marbles for a couple of days. She wouldn’t be popular if she weren’t so (quirkily) attractive. Her voice is annoying but the content is relatively helpful–I really like the as-seen-on-tv reviews she does.
Also, where are you seeing a fisheye lens? I think that’s just what her face looks like. Her mouth and teeth are naturally pretty large.
Nothing that could remotely relate to this. I was first introduced to her schtick when quite a few pre-pended video ads showed for videos, none of which I watched (I skipped over them as soon as possible). Then one of her separate ads starting showing up at the top of ANY YouTube list, whether I was searching for anything, reviewing my own posts, or just browsing randomly. I never clicked on any of her ads until curiosity got the better of me and I just looked at a few seconds of one.
Just to check, I brought up the first video in my own posting list. On the right column are a mixture of “recommended” (I think) related videos. Some are others I have posted, some have obvious connections to those, and some have obvious connections to something else I have viewed recently. At the top of the list is a grav3yardgirl video tagged “FEATURED” and seems to have no relation to any of the others.
I just went to another browser tab where I just watched an Aron Ra video. At the top of the right column list is another grav3yardgirl video. Somehow I don’t see the connection. Aron doesn’t use nearly as much makeup, for one.
Anyone want to try an experiment? Find one of her videos, watch it for a few seconds, then go to something else. Now, over the next few hours or days, see what pops up in your recommended list. Let’s see how persistent she is. But don’t say I didn’t warn you.
That would be a refreshing change. You can never get enough of LOLCATS.
It’s not an extreme fisheye, but she is close to the wide angle lens and it distorts her features a little. I think it’s intentional, sort of a visual, literal “in your face.” Professional photogs, unless they are going for effect, try to do the opposite, using a long lens that tends to flatten faces and minimize noses.
So I went to the video clip mentioned in this thread, and grav3yardgirl was the 2nd suggested video on the list, although that might not be a good test, since “girl” might be a common link. Using the link on that page, I viewed the related Robert Palmer video, and another grav3yardgirl video was again #2 on the list.
She doesn’t appear at all for me, even though I’ve viewed one of her videos (after doing a search on the name), either for that clip or for the Robert Palmer one (Addicted to Love). The first link for me is a Justin Bieber song, but most of the others are Ingrid Michaelson (the girl in the video linked to in that thread), with a sprinkling of Robert Palmer and others. A couple of my links are Compay Segundo and Shakira, perhaps because I’ve searched for Latin music in the past.
I don’t know how Youtube suggested links are generated, but you seem to have contaminated yourself somehow.
It’s funny, when I was younger I imagined how horrible it would be to be old and completely clueless about pop culture trends and current events that everyone else knew and talked about. I never dreamed that it could be a blessing.
I’m pretty sure Featured Videos are now sometimes placed based on your past history, ala your “Recommended Videos.” You might want to go to your history and clean it out.
And annoying works well on YouTube, as kids seem to like annoying-style humor. That’s why FRED, Annoying Orange, and Pewdiepie became popular.
Why do you know who these people are? Seriously, go read a book or bake some scones or build something.
I got so far as to type “grav3yardgirl” into youtube search, but I metaphorically slapped myself before I hit ‘enter’ (I’m now reading a book on how to build a scone-baking contraption).
PewDiePie is a very, very popular Let’s Player – somebody who records video games and his commentary on them as they’re being played. He’s not a bad guy, I want to be clear that I have nothing against him as a person, and he seems very gracious and grateful to his fans. That said, his content is characterized by being excessively annoying, where he uses an obnoxious voice, and his commentary tends to lack coherence or interesting content. There’s also a lot of shock humor, tons of rape jokes for instance. He still shows up on a lot of “related videos” if you watch Let’s Play content, because he has the biggest channel on Youtube right now (and reportedly pulls in millions of dollars by some metrics, though how much of that is really generated and what percentage his ad network Polaris takes I have no idea).
There is a certain irony that people are making these complaints about someone who plays video games for the internet, but he is viewed by a large part of the LP community as someone who succeeded on little substance, compared to a lot of LPers who put a lot of real effort to provide insightful, interesting commentary and good editing. To some degree the hate is about the same sort that Michael Bay gets for his movies. Blockbusters that make money but are ultimately dumb and viewed with contempt compared to less successful but much better constructed films released the same year.
I don’t think I use Youtube the way everyone else does. I don’t do subscriptions, I don’t check it if I don’t have anything specific I want to see a video of, and I don’t comment. I’ve always wondered who did, and why.
Have you ever followed a TV show, or a book series, or a video game series, or a movie series? It’s not any different than that.
As for comments, I don’t know, I don’t comment on big channels. However, some smaller channels have a sense of community just like the SDMB so sometimes I’ll comment on them.
Hm. I have tons of YT subscriptions, I watch tons of videos, I do tons of commenting, and I’ve never heard of this girl or seen any of her videos even suggested in my feed.
