Grease can (cooking) source?

I have a set of kitchen tins that are probably 50 years old. They are brushed stainless (?) steel with plastic tops with raised letters saying what should be in them: Flour, sugar, coffee, tea, grease. The grease one has a perforated basket in it. The idea is that you pour your bacon grease in it and the perforations filter out the bits. You can then use the clean grease for cooking. (I’d post a photo, only I don’t know where this particular tin is.)

My sister wants a grease can for her birthday. Why? I guess she cooks with grease. But where can I get one? It doesn’t have to be like the one I have (somewhere); just function the same.

It is amazing what you find when you realize you need to find it. I would think that any decent kitchen supply store (bed bath & beyond, Williams Sonoma, your grocer) etc would definitely carry them. I’d bet amazon.com does also.

I’d never heard of a butter bell, but once I had and decided I wanted one, I found on at Ross for less than $5.

I think you will find them a little hard to find nowadays. BBB and LNT don’t have them here in LA. I could not find one on Amazon.
Googling I found
these
this one (scroll down)

The only place I have seen them lately is in antique stores.

Thanks! I’ve got one on order.

OH! Oh, dear. Someone in marketing and labeling should be sending out resumes. From the first link:

Oil Container cum Strainer

That’s why I didn’t order from them.

I don’t know if it’s okay to be whooshed in GQ or not. I would just like to point out that “cum” is Latin for “with” and that this appeared to be an international site.
OTOH, it did catch my eye.

Oh, I know. It was just me being silly. (We’re allowed a *little *silliness in GQ after the question is answered and accepted.) And, of course, nothing else on the page was in Latin! In fact, several entries down is an “Oil Pot **with **mesh strainer”, so it really seemed out of place.

Which one did you order?

Well, one was from India and I didn’t know if it would get here in time. The other was aluminum and I wanted to get her steel. So using different search terms based on your links and other posts I found a Fryer’s Friend Grease Keeper.

Linky?

The one I found (new) was on eBay. Had I refined my search a little better I would have found it on amazon. Three dollars more than eBay, but I would have bought it there if I had found it there first.

Thanks, Johnny! That’s one of those things I’ve been wanting, but keep forgetting to look for.
Mmmm, bacon grease. But all things in moderation, to paraphrase Julia Child. Including moderation, to paraphrase **Jacques Pepin.
Peace,

Ever had spaghetti and eggs?

Is that one of those things you put butter in, then invert in water to keep the butter fresh at room temperature?
Great device, btw.
Peace,
mangeorge

No, I never had. I’ve had reheated leftover spaghetti on buttered white bread sandwiches though when I was younger.

Since you’d said you were looking for one I went to the amazon page to see if the one remaining in stock had been bought. Now instead of Availability: ‘Only 1 left in stock’ it says ‘Availability: In stock’. Maybe I should get one for myself. Bacon grease is good for seasoning cast iron.

Here is another source for them.

Over thirty years ago, spaghetti rings and boiled eggs. I still remember it clearly with acute embarrassment. Not likely to win any awards for culinary prowess.

I’ve had left over spaghetti (sauced) on bread with mayo. Cold. Yum.

This is an actual  dish. I saw it on a show with Jacques Pepin, I think.
Yeah. Here’s how it’s done. There are many variations possible. I have used bacon grease where it says “olive oil”. Delicious. Over easy on the eggs works well too, just make the yolks as runny as you can.
Tip: Add butter to the grease after you turn off the heat. Then pour over the spaghetti.
Another tip: ignore any admonitions from Johnny L.A. about arteries and such. :stuck_out_tongue:
