Great lines in songs

I’m gonna mention Counting Crows, whose lead singer, Adam Duritz, has got to be one of the most depressing sonuvabitch on the face of the earth. George Jones and the late Johnny Cash would tell this guy to lighten up.

“Waiting for trains that just…never come” from High Life

“If everything is nothing, then are we anything? Is it better to be better than to be anything?” from Einstein On the Beach (For an Eggman)

“I want to be the last thing that you hear when you’re falling asleep” from Catapult

“Things are getting worse, but I feel a lot better…and that’s all that really matters to me” from Amy Hit the Atmosphere

“Fix your hair just right…put your jeans on tight…or wear a dress so I can get it off real easy” from Up All Night (Frankie Miller Goes to Hollywood)

“I dream I’m in New York City some nights…angels float down from all the buildings…there’s something about an angel that just kills me…I keep hoping something will” from Chelsea

“I wanted to see you walking backwards to get the sensation of you coming home…I wanted to see you walking away from me without the sensation you’re leaving me alone” from *Time and Time Again

“But we only stay in orbit for a moment of time…and then you’re everybody’s satellite; I wish that you were mine” from Recovering the Satellites

Or how about Ben Folds?

“I feel like a quote out of context” from Best Imitation of Myself

“She said, ‘You’ve been pushing me like I was a sore tooth,’” from The Last Polka

I don’t get many things right the first time - in fact, I am told that a lot - now I know all the wrong turns, the stumbles and falls brought me here" from The Luckiest

“In a haze these days, I pull up to a stoplight…I can feel something’s not right…I can feel someone’s blasting me with hate and bass, sending dirty vibes my way because my great great great great grandad made someone’s great great great great grandaddies slaves…it wasn’t my idea…it wasn’t my idea…never was my idea…I just drove to the store for some Preparation H” from Rockin’ the Suburbs

Very GREAT lines above!!!

A couple I like:

Through this world I’ve stumbled
so many times betrayed
trying to find an honest word to find
the truth enslaved
oh you speak to me in riddles
and you speak to me in rhymes
my body aches to breathe your breath
your words keep me alive
And I would be the one
to hold you down
kiss you so hard
I’ll take your breath away
and after, I’d wipe away the tears
just close your eyes dear
Into this night I wander
it’s morning that I dread
another day of knowing of
the path I fear to tread
oh into the sea of waking dreams
I follow without pride
nothing stands between us here
and I won’t be denied (sic - I wish - sic)

  • Sarah McLachlan

And for anyone who’s ever been dumped:
And every time I scratch my nails down someone else’s back
I hope you feel it…well can you feel it

  • Alanis Morrissette

I have to agree with those above who have lamented Warren Zevon’s departing of this planet.

Lyrics speak to all of us - in different ways, at different times in our lives.

Thank God for MUSIC!!!
