Great Male/Female duets

I sat in with a little jazz trio Saturday night. Good female vocalist. We sang harmony on Carol Kings “Will you still Love Me tomorrow” and it went well. We talked about getting together and planning some classic duets.

So I was thinking of some classic duets we might do such as

Unforgettable, the Nat and Natalie Version.

That Loving You Feeling Roy Orbison and Emmy Lou Harris.

When I Fall In Love by ???

So Doper Music lovers. What suggestions for classic duets, Jazz, pop, or anything that can be interpreted that way?

I assume you mean the Clive Griffin and Celine Dion version of “When I Fall in Love” off the Sleepless in Seattle soundtrack, but Natalie Cole also made a duet version of it with her dad’s recording.

Ray Charles and Cleo Laine doing “Summertime” from Porgy & Bess. Sublime.

Blossom Dearie & Bob Dorough, “Baby, It’s Cold Outside”

Gram Parsons & Emmylou Harris, “Love Hurts”

Ethel Merman and Donald O’Connor singing Irving Berlin’s “You’re Just in Love” on the soundtrack of the movie version of Call Me Madam.

Find, beg, borrow or st…well, don’t steal, but just GET the soundtrack to the movie One From The Heart*. The songs were all written by Tom Waits, and there are several wonderful duets between Waits and Crystal Gayle. Yes, I said Tom Waits and Crystal Gayle. Well, come to think of it, maybe there aren’t that many actual duets. I tend to think of it that way because the lyrics are very important in the movie (about 4 couples, one couple being the singers). Get it anyway. It’s amazing, kinda jazzy/bluesy and pretty wonderful. If you’re in a snarky mood, try this one.

  • Great movie too, but the DVD version is disapointing because it was edited badly. The theatrical version is great though.

I love Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters singing Sondheim’s “Evening Primrose.” Sublime.

Oh god, I hate to admit it, but I like Elton John and Kiki Dee’s Don’t Go Breakin’ My Heart. Not cool. But Catchy.

I guess I’m a true Elton John fan.

Maybe not a duet by strict definitions, but Mick and Tina’s version of Gimme Shelter is damn good too.

Here ya go - the ultimate.

Baby, It’s Cold Outside - Ray Charles and Betty Carter

We could also discuss Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell…

Dancing Cheek to Cheek - Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong

Bonnie Raitt and John Prine - Angel From Montgomery

What album could a guy find that on?

Meatloaf and whats-er-name, “Paradise by the Dashboard Light”
Eddie Money and Ronnie Specter, “Take Me Home Tonight”
And I somewhat shamefacedly confess that I’m a sucker for the Streisand-Diamond duet “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers.”

The Apostrophe Twins, Terence Trent D’Arby and Des’ree on “Delicate.”

Well there’s that karaoke bar favorite, Grease’s “Summer Lovin’”…

“Jackson” by Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash.

The Nancy Sinatra, Lee Hazelwood version is good too.

I just saw that movie* for the first time a few hours ago and was going to recommend the soundtrack. Definitely worth looking into.

*I loved the movie, by the way. It’s criminally underrated.

How about Prince and Rosie Gaines doing “Nothing Compares to U?”

Kenny Rogers and Sheena Easton - “We’ve Got Tonight”

Lionel Ritchie and Diana Ross - “Endless Love”

Marc Anthony and Tina Arena - “I Want To Spend My Lifetime Loving You” (from the “Zorro” soundtrack - I adore this song. I like to play it really loud and sing at the top of my lungs.)

Teri de Sario & K.C. - “Yes, I’m Ready” - a pop classic, my friend. Actually, that song could be great fun to sing as a duet.

Stevie Nicks did some duets (Tom Petty and Don Henley come to mind), but I don’t like her voice, so I’m not recommending them.

“Delicate” is lovely, Exapno. I hadn’t heard that particular TTD song before. Nice little cha-cha.

I thought that was going to be easy, but I can’t find an answer. It’s a live track. I’m guessing my version is the one found on Live in London and Turner’s own Rare Tracks IV.

Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush (and/or Paula Cole) - “In Your Eyes”
