Greatest sports movie?

Another Olympics doc-- Tokyo Olympiad

Bull Durham, Brian’s song

Jerry Maguire, just to add something new to the list.

And Horse Feathers. Finest football movie ever made.

Some that haven’t been mentioned:
Blue Chips
Rudy
Any Given Sunday
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby
Major League
The Blind Side
Necessary Roughness
The Express

Oh, another good candidate for best EVAR, is this Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India. It is epic, beautifully made, somewhat corny but highly enjoyable. I love it and I don’t know a damned thing about cricket.

I may need to download it. I know nothing about cricket but my daughters took classes in it. They were twice the age of their classmates, but they were half as ept, being my kids.

There is singing and dancing, right? I haven’t wasted decades watching “Namaste, America,” have I?

It is indeed a musical–a four hour one, in fact–but is immensely entertaining while also making the cricket fairly accessible to those (like me) completely clueless about the sport.

You should check out Harold Lloyd’s brilliant The Freshman, since he not only made the climactic football game funnier than the Marx Bros (whose movie I adore), but earlier as well.

Dodgeball for me.

She’s hot, but he’s still Vince Vaughan.

The first two Major League movies.
The first two Mighty Ducks movies.

Cool Runnings.

I rarely find Harold Lloyd fans.

While it’s not necessarily thought of as a sports movie, I think Lucas deserves to be on that list.

I’ve always thought it was one of the most under-appreciated movies of all time.

I have seen The Freshman… doesn’t it culminate in a boat race? Am I thinking of the wrong movie? Oh, yes, I am. I was thinking of Keaton’s, not Lloyd’s.

I’d say National Velvet should rank highly.

Are we still listing what we thing is the “greatest sports movie” or just listing every sports movie?

Unfortunately, this tends to happen to most “what’s the best” threads… It’s almost as bad as the inevitable “What, no love for…” post.

Bang the Drum Slowly

This is my favorite sports novel, but I don’t think the movie measures up.

So to get back to the original purpose, which was to identify the greatest sports film and not just any sports films, here’s a list from ESPN. Their experts chose as the top ten: Hoosiers, Raging Bull, Field of Dreams, Bull Durham, Caddyshack, The Natural, Chariots of Fire, Jerry Maguire, Seabiscuit and Remember the Titans.
