Green Beer Bottles

Do green beer bottles make beer taste skunky?

I guarantee I can tell the difference between beer in a green bottle and beer not from a green bottle.

Some people agree with me but others say I am nuts.

So what is the deal?- do green beer bottle do something to the light that makes beer taste skunky?

If so, why don’t beer companies just stop using them?

Thanks

Yes. If those beer bottles (or clear ones like Corona) are exposed to light for extended periods…they are far more prone to producing skunky beer.

Doesn’t seem to hurt their profit margin…probably the same reason they use rice and other adjuncts rather than 100 percent barley malt.

Light.

Light makes a beer taste skunky.

So I guess it depends on:

a) How much light is exposed to the bottle.
b) How much light gets through the glass.

Scientific American goes into details about the causes of skunkiness here

UV light breaks down compounds (from hops) in the beer.

My guess is that they producers never thought they’d actually get us to drink the stuff in the first place and once we did we expected a clear glass/green glass bottle.

See, in my house, beer doesn’t have a shelf life long enough for the light to even play a factor.

Actually, that’s not true. The little light in the fridge helps me find my beer.
