Green Lantern

Just back from vacation in Montreal, and while there I spotted someone wearing a Green Lantern shirt. Are they making a movie? Does anyone know?

A casual search for “green lantern movie” finds a lot of speculation but few facts.

It would certainly be an interesting character to base a movie on, though the CGI effects budget would have to be huMONgous.

I haven’t heard anything about a movie, but if it’s a shirt you want, try Graphitti Designs.

Speaking of Green Lantern, I have another question I’ll put here. In the early Hal Jordan GL comics, he has an “Eskimo” assistant named Thomas something-that-begins-with-K. However, he’s referred to by his nickname, “Pieface”.

I’ve often heard references to that moniker being racist, but growing up in Louisiana, I didn’t know many Aleutians, and so I’d never heard the term before - or since. A search on Google for “pieface racist” doesn’t turn anything up either.

What’s the deal with this term? It just seems odd to me that Aleutians would have a racist epithet of their own, since I would imagine that people who would call them such things would encounter them pretty infrequently. IS there more to this other than, “That was a racist term for those people”?

Someone purchased one of those shirts for me a few months ago. I’ve seen them at a local comic book store so they’re not exactly rare.

I’m sure there’s someone working on at least the basic preperation for a Green Lantern movie since pretty much every single comic book character in the universe is at that point right now but god only knows if one will actually get made.

It’s not one of your standard racist terms, no. It’s one that Hal made up, all by himself, but it is at least faintly racist.

When Hal met Tom (whose last name is, if I remember rightly, Kalamaku), he said something like, “An Eskimo, huh? Well, the only Eskimo I’ve ever seen is an Eskimo Pie, so I think I’ll call you Pieface.”

I’m not sure if this is stronger evidence for Hal being racist or simply being a complete moron with no social skills – I guess you can decide for yourself.

So if your were going to make a Green Lantern film…

Which GL(s)?

(for me Hal Jordan maybe Hal and Guy)

Which Villian?
(Sinestro is the obvious but maybe something like Crisis)

Who would you cast?
(let me get back to you because all I can think of now is Clooney at Hal Jordan and I know that’s not right)

Thanks, Horswoggler. I never made that connection. I got it now.

I think it would be pretty obvious that they’d go with the African American one. That’s the one they’ve chosen for the cartoons, and probably the one most people will be familiar with. Can’t remember his name off-hand, for some reason. I think Wesley Snipes would be a good choice–he’s proven he can wear a costume and be impressive. He has a nice gritty look to him that might translate well–GL doesn’t seem to be a character that goes in for pratfalls and one-liners.

His name is John Stewart.

Actually Hal Jordon was the one in the cartoons for about ten years with the various Superfriends series, Kyle Rainer was the one in the recent Superman cartoon, and Jon Stewart is the one in the current Justice League cartoon. I’d suspect that most people are familiar with the Hal Jordon one since he’s gotten the most screen time over the years but I don’t think it really matters which one you portray (well, except Guy because his personality was so… um… distinct).

They should probably just pick the name based on which actor they want. Since everything will be changed to fit a movie what label the person is stuck with doesn’t matter.

Have to go with the Hal version… that grey hair on temples, hot, hot hot…

Probably would be Kyle Raynor in the movies, the current focus of the GL comics, since movies draw comic book readership. Then again, the TV/film version of comics tend to influence the actual comics (costume-wise, more often than not), so anything’s possible.

Personally, Guy would be my choice.

I don’t care who plays Kyle, Guy or Hal, but there’s a part of me that really wants to see Sinestro played by Chevy Chase.

As for the shirts – GL is a common one in comic stores. I have one or two Flash shirts myself.

Forget the shirt.

I want the ring!

Dude, I have the ring. Or used to. Forget where I put it…
Seriously, they made these little glow-in-da-dark GL rings about 10 years ago; gave 'em out at comix shops. Spiff.

(Or is that not what you meant?

You can have the ring, but ten seconds after you receive it, your phone rings and a mysterious voice tells you you’ll be dead by tomorrow.

Who knows, maybe it’s worth it.

They sell imitation rings in comic stores. Kyle has the only one that works (also I think he still has the one he got in Emerald Knights . . . so Kyle has the only ones that work)

Kyle gave his second ring to John Stewart last month, and went for a cosmic vacation, so Mr. Stewart is large and in charge again. He’s so cool. I hate how they keep paralyzing him…

As for a flick, I find this funny, because bck when I was practicing with screenwriting the first two screenplays I wrote were Green Lantern stories (Hal Jordan as the man, of course). The first one was based loosely on the “Emerald Dawn” stuff from a few years ago, with Evil Star as the villain.

The second and a planned-but-not-written third one had Sinestro as the villain (teamed in 2 with Darkseid and in 3 with the Manhunters and Star Sapphire) in an Emerald Twilight-type story where he and Darkseid create a crisis that they use to kill the bulk of the GLC (thanks to Sinestro’s manipulations of the Guardians as their “most trusted advisor,” of course), and then the last seven (Hal, Kilowog, Guy, Katma, Arisia along with newcomers Kyle and John) GLs and Ganthet must, in Part 3, bring Sinestro down. Sinestro by now has re-activated the Manhunters to be his own “Corps” as he imposes “Order” on the Universe, and turns Carol into Star Sapphire in order to distract Jordan.

I actually really liked those stories. I still pick at the first one every now and then – I’ve edited down to a svelte 99 pages. It would make a great film.

The second one is a bit rougher, but I still like it. The third one is only half written, sadly. :frowning:

I would love to see them make a GL movie… but to me they’ll never live up to the films I woulda made.

What, no G’Nort? Or Ch’p?
