green thumb Dopers from hot climates: Vitex or Desert Willow?

So we’re gonna rip out the weedy not-really-grass on the boulevard (the little strip between the sidewalk and the street) this fall once the weather cools and re-plant it with hardy xeriscaping. There is space for a few shrubby trees, and we’re trying to decide between vitexand desert willow.

Anyone here have experience with either or both? The ones around here seem to be doing well in the heat (good!) and they seem to be getting more common (also good! means they’re cheap, easily available, and hardy to our area!) and both of them bloom. So … is it a tossup? Is one better or more desirable than the other? The main difference I see so far is that desert willow has a much longer bloom time - they both started around the same time (ok, vitex started blooming earlier) but the desert willows I see are still going strong, and the vitex flowers have pretty much fizzled out.

Also, does anyone have experience with specific desert willow cultivars? (Vitex seems to be, y’know, just the one plant.)

Oh, yeah: I’m in north Texas (Dallas, specifically).

Here in Houston the Vitex is popular and blooms profusely but, like you say, it’s come and gone awhile back. I’d never seen the Desert Willow before but the linked pictures are beautiful, the flowers look kinda like a cross between an orchid and passionvine.
