This Saturday (8/31) at 11PM EDT and Sunday (9/1) at 8PM EDT, GregAtlanta will be on Book TV talking about his new book Sailors to the End, about the 1967 USS Forrestal fire, to an audience at Border’s Books and Music in Washington, D.C. You can find more info about the program here (for some reason, they refer to him as “Greg Freeman” in the link). I had previously talked about Greg’s book and his interview on NPR in Cafe Society.
Very cool! I hope we have C-SPAN2. We don’t have Comedy Central or the History Channel, and I am NOT happy about it.
One note: A cool thing about this event is that it wasn’t just me jabbering about my book. Several veterans of the Forrestal speak also, and it’s really something to hear these guys coming to terms with what happened to them 35 years ago.
A great bunch of guys, and I’m glad I got to know them as well as I did.
Thanks for clarifying the station, UncleBill. I tend to think of C-SPAN2 as “that thing with the boring politicians that Book TV becomes during the week.” No Comedy Central or History Channel? How do you survive?
Also, thanks Greg for providing further information on the event. I’m looking forward to watching it.
By the way, Arizona Dopers (and US left coasters), this translates to 8PM tonight (8/31) and 5PM tomorrow for us. So this is one of the “subtract the time difference” channels, not a “same time Pacific, so do the math from there” channel. I just checked TV Guide to make sure.
geobabe and I just finished watching the program tonight. Great job, GregAtlanta (or Gary). Both for the talk you gave there, and for the obviously fantastic job you did with the book. To have those kinds of endorsements means you got it right. geo has just finished it, so I get it next.
I stayed up last night to watch, and the absolute best review I can give is this: Mr. Kitty not only stayed up with me to watch it, he actually stayed awake through the whole thing. That’s a huge deal, so you should be very, very honored.
Mr. Kitty has a vet going through his group right now (for PTSD), and it’s recently come to light via the overseeing psychiatrist that he’s been the only one in over 30 years to get through to this guy. I can only imagine what an exceptional person you must be to have all those men open up to you the way they did. Congrats to you for telling their story right.
If we send you a copy of the book, will you autograph it for us?
Caught the show last Saturday. Excellent monologue, Greg. It was particularly moving to hear the sailors’ stories and responses to your book. Even when reading a true story, it’s all too easy to think of the people involved as just characters in a novel. Seeing and hearing these guys speak made me realize even more how real they were and how real their emotions were. I’ve already congratulated you on the book, but now I’d like to thank you for giving these guys a voice and clearing them of the blame after all these years.
By the way, if any of y’all missed the program and are interested in seeing it, it’s archived here.
Damn—sorry I missed it! Many congrats, Greg, and I hope your books go flying off the shelves—not actually injuring anyone, of course.
I’m off to amazon.com to investigate this book further, it sounds fascinating . . .
