We see on cartoons characters throwing grenades, but messing up big time and throwing the pin instead of the grenade. Given the fact that human stupidity knows no limits, I believe it would actually be possible to happen in real life. But… did it actually happen? what happened next? CABOOOM?
Well, after you pull the pin you have to let go of the spoon (lever). But, yes, it would explode.
If you didn’t drop it after you threw the pin and you didn’t panic, you could still throw it or hold on to it until someone could find another pin to put in it.
Or recently this.
I explained to my first squad leader when I got to Nam that I had NO throwing arm; no range and no accuracy, and it was a bad idea for me to be issued any frag grenades as part of my basic load unless I was just supposed to carry some for someone else. He ended up assigning me to be the claymore mine guy. Which worked for me.
There’s a question that answered itself. “Why are they standing on a dirt platform surrounded by a deep trench?” [Grenade falls into trench on one side of the platform, instructor and trainee dive into the trench on the other side] “Oh . . . that’s why.”
A: “Shenanigans and grenades”
