Partly. But a big reason was that this area is a very expensive one so some ugly social housing just wouldn’t do–so you cover it up and make it look fancy like the rest of the neighborhood.
And now they have a perfect reason to tear it down and replace it with luxury high rent apartments! Win/win! (For everyone that matters to them, anyway.)
Quite the reverse, actually. The claim has been made that they exist. I have not found them. IOW Cite?
…the claim has been made that what exists?
Is there any evidence for this theory? Plenty of towerblocks where I am in the north of England have had this cladding in the last few years, and they aren’t remotely in what you’d call expensive areas.
Ooh… according to the Guardian:
It seems I need to remind you:
The links you gave were remarkably content-free. One mentions 2400 items but doesn’t detail any. Help me and fight my ignorance here.
He’s lying.
I’ve known you for a long time but am a little bit sickened by your attempts to defend the Tories in this thread. Tories have been in power nationally for seven years and in Kensington for pretty much forever (they’ve had a Labour MP for a week and the council is Tory controlled). Part of being in power is accepting responsibility. Stop making excuses for them.
K&C council have a huge stockpile of money that they partly use to give “rebates” to fill council tax payers (ie the wealthier residents) in election years.
David Lammy, whose account that is, lost a personal friend in the fire. That bodes well for all concerned being forced to carry out a proper investigation.
And bizarrely K&C council seem to have given up and handed over control of the situation to a neighbouring council. This link is from Buzzfeed News but it seems to be well sourced: Councils Across London Are Stepping In To Deal With The Grenfell Tower Fire Crisis
…that doesn’t answer my question. That post was made **after **you said “Then I’m sure you’ll have no trouble fighting my ignorance and listing them.” What claim are you talking about?
Be careful.
This poster is very quick clicking the ‘Report’ button.

How can they get away with crying too poor for full fire safety while sitting on a huge stockpile of money? Don’t they answer to anyone?
-
What does, ‘fill council tax payers’, mean? Kickbacks to the rich residents? How is that permitted? Is there no oversight at all ?
- It’s a typo, they mean ‘full council taxpayers’ - my guess is that means those paying a full(er?) amount of council taxes. They got a rebate of unspent taxes that remained due to the austerity measures which put that less expensive cladding up and skipped paying for a more comprehensive fire and smoke alarm system.
The rich get richer, the poor get poorer, that’s how it goes. And everybody knows.
Actually, I think the only time I’ve hit the Report button in this thread is to report one of my own posts. Plus possibly a spammer.
One or two only? That’s impressive by your standards.
LOL
I believe in putting blame where blame is due, not blaming the Tories (or whoever) just because. It’s easy to do, and can backfire. No one has yet posted anything that definitively demonstrates that the Tories are to blame. When someone does, I’ll join in the opprobrium. Until then, I’ll withhold judgement and I suggest the Dope does too.
Actually belay that. I don’t think I’ve reported a single post in this thread, I was thinking of the thread in Elections where I was accused of having reported a lot of posts.
He’s certainly being careful with his words. I forgot to include a link.
I’m sorry, what? Are you outright saying rich residents got unspent taxes rebated to them from the same group crying too poor for safety measures and the better cladding where the poorer people lived?
Sorry, but that makes so little sense. How can they both have unspent tax money AND be unable to provide money for basic safety measures, in the same district? How on earth can they be handing rebates to some, while at the same time, they are telling others, ‘There’s no money for that safety stuff!’? Seriously?
How many people are on the council? A handful? A largish group? Aren’t there any with sense? Or integrity? Or the balls to whistleblow? Don’t these councils get any oversight! You’d think since they enjoy protection from liability there’d be something in place.
It’s shocking that you reveal this so calmly like it’s no big deal, happens all the time. It’s a little bit stunning to people, who till now, were unaware of just how these things actually work in England. It’s easy to just assume codes are as strict and taken as seriously, as in other places. It’s quite eye opening, I must say.
