Grey Whales spotted here

Grey whales spotted in Birch Bay

I’ve lived here since the end of 2003, and this is the first time I’ve heard about whales in the area. The bay is very shallow. You can walk waaaaaaay out and only be knee-deep in the water. At low tide it’s a vast mud flat. That’s why the water is so warm, and why Birch Bay has been a popular Summer holiday spot for decades. You can see how shallow it is here. I don’t know, but presume, the photo was taken from the State Park, and that the whales are in the deeper area where the floor drops off. The land in the background is Birch Point.

Cool! Blue whales are visiting us now off the coast of San Diego.

Saw some about 5 years ago while on a ferry heading to Orcas Island.

Saw some gigantic whales a few weeks ago just yards off the beach in Carmel. Not sure what species they were but I think some sort of baleen whale. The funny thing is I was looking way out to sea to see if I could see any whale spouts and all of a sudden I saw them right at the beach. They were huge beasts-- I’ve seen dolphins dozens of times at the beach, but never whales (yeah, they are technically the same thing, but you know what I mean).
