Grocery store macrobrews

What do you all think is the best run-of-the-mill grocery store bought macrobrew? I’m not a big beer-in-a-can fan, but while with some Canadian friends, I drank a can of Molson XXX, and thought that it wasn’t that bad. Definitely the best canned beer I’d ever had. (OK, I’ve only had 3: Genny, Genny light, and Molson XXX) Of course, you can’t buy beer in a grocery store in Canada, but you know what I mean. I’ve also heard good things about Miller High Life.

Er, what’s you’re definition of Macrobrew? I assume you mean brews that aren’t too big, aren’t too small. I’d take Pete’s Wicked Ale. If you’re talking huge brews, I’d take Bud or Michelob. But I am not as picky as I used to be.

I’m talking huge. This should be a category that includes mostly “bad” beers. Pete’s would not qualify.

Well, all American beer sucks, so none of them would be in the running for the best brew.

I like Rolling Rock.

My husband is a beer snob, (brews his own) but he understands that watery American beer does have some uses. For instance, when a bunch of friends got together one summer to help him lay down a brick patio in our back yard, he bought a case of Budweiser. The guys prefer beer over soda, but don’t want anything heavy or sleep-inducing. Budweiser is watery and innocuous enough to simply slake one’s thirst during a hot, sweaty job.

Discussing various beers during a break from bricklaying, one of the guys, defending his preference of Bud, said to my husband, “you like a Bud now and then.” “Sure,” replied my husband, “to wash down my beer.”

Hey, hey now. I assume you are talking about American mass-produced big label pilsner-type beers (Bud, Miller, etc). If so, you get no argument from me.

But let’s not throw such a big generalization around if you mean “any beer made in America.” There are a lot of excellent beers out there made by local and micro breweries. I’ll take a New Galrus Uff-Da Bock (made right here in Wisconsin) over an import beer any day.

I’m a bit of a beer snob, but live on a family-of-four,
mom-stays-home-while-the-kids-are-young budget right
now.

I don’t hate Naragansett (sp?), Ganny for short.

I don’t hate Gennessee either.

If they still make Tuborg (haven’t seen it in years),
that was good, cheap beer, IMO.
