I was not-so-patiently awaiting the release of the newest GTA 5 trailer and I noticed that there isn’t a thread here for the game. The last one was around a year old. No big surprise, since the last trailer was a year ago. But in the last couple of weeks a lot of new info has come out, and we have a release window for the game. Time for a new thread!
The game is set in Los Santos, the GTA version of Los Angeles. The world map is going to be HUGE. According to the developers it’s bigger than the world for GTA IV, Red Dead Redemption, and GTA: San Andreas combined. While the city itself is going to be enormous, there is also a lot of countryside to explore as well. I’m pretty excited about that, as roaming the countryside was one of my favorite things to do in San Andreas. There will be 3 main protagonists, and you can switch between them at will. Sometimes they’ll work together, other times they’ll have their own individual missions. Unlike previous GTA games, the entire map is unlocked from the start. This means it will probably be 3-4 hours before I even start the first mission as I’ll be exploring the city.
The best info page I could find is on Rockstar’s own site, they’ve compiled links to all of the recent previews and interviews, here. Here’s the newest trailer, which they released as I was typing this post (it is awesome).
I haven’t been this excited for a game since Red Dead Redemption. I keep looking for more information even though I know it will just make the wait worse. Come share my pain!
I’m kind of over huge game worlds, unless all those different areas are actually full of interesting things to do. It’s all about the density of cool shit, IMO, and them bragging about having an uber-huge world would actually worry me about its prospects.
Shooby, I agree. Give me instead one small city area but where all the buildings and shops can be entered. Yakuza 4 is almost this. It’s only one small part of Tokyo that can be walked around in ten minutes but there’s a lot to do there and you can enter the sewers and go over the rooftops as well as enter shops convenience stores, bowling, batting center, arcades, karaoke, etc etc etc. yakuza 5 is out in December with a bigger world, unfortunately in Japanese only at first…
I guess it depends on who is making the game. Some game maps are huge just to be huge, which results in a lot of boring, travel through low-content areas, but I think Rockstar has a good record. I loved the level of detail they put into Liberty City in GTA 4, and I loved the country/small town areas in San Andreas and RDR, so (I hope!) this will just be a combination of both.
I read in an article that GTA5 will have the biggest map, *if you include all the indoor spaces.*So it sounds like there’s going to be plenty of buildings to enter.
I really enjoyed GTA III, then was bored with Vice City in a few minutes. No desire for new ones, mainly because I never really enjoyed the missions or plot stuff…I just enjoyed flying around the map causing mayhem. That’s fun and all, but I don’t need to shell out $$$ to do the same thing in a different map.
In the new one you can people people to death with a giant purple dildo. You can also grab people as human shields and, if they live, put a bullet through their head to get rid of them.
It’s GTA without the seriousness.
Ah. Well, I thought GTA: Vice City and San Andreas were about perfect in tone.
I’m not sure how using someone as a human shield and then killing him is supposed to be wacky, considering you can do that in Splinter Cell as well (IIRC).
The Ballad of Gay Tony DLC had a bit more of an upbeat/goofy vibe than the GTA 4 main game. It also got rid of that horrible filter that made everything look so drab. It’s worth a try if you haven’t played it.
Some of the missions include such things as
[ul]
[li]Star in the game’s version of an episode of COPS. You get directed to break up crimes such as domestic violence, streakers, public intoxication and such. The more spectacularly violent you can be the better your score. [/li][li]Drive a sewage truck around town and hose down buildings and vehicles with sewage.[/li][li]Insurance fraud. Walk in front of moving vehicles, the more they hurl/damage you, the better your score.[/li][/ul]
Also you can pick people up and throw them. This proved to be my favorite method of assault in the entire game and I really wish GTA would steal it.
The series doesn’t have as much polish as GTA (at least the first two didn’t, I haven’t tried SR3 yet), and it’s way over the top, all the time, but it is fun.
