GTA IV Reviews start pouring in

Games are becoming too graphically intense for them to have the processing power to render two seperate instances of the game in split-screen mode.

I had just read this post and went to play GTA4 and my game froze for the first time ever on the loading screen. I rebooted a couple of times to no avail. Then I tried logging out of PSN and starting the game and it worked. That’s a pretty big bug there. I’m suprised that the game is SO glitchy after being in dev for so long.

Thanks for the tip though!

I experienced the hanging too - logging out of PSN fixed it.

Other than that, no glitches. The framerate is surprisingly poor, though.

After playing this game for a while longer I would like to add that I don’t think there is a good middle ground between the foot and hand brakes. The hand brakes made you slide all over creation and the foot brakes don’t stop you fast enough. I wish there were some driving settings you could change.

Nope. You mash both. If you do it properly, you slide sideways into a 90 degree turn into the proper lane. You obviously can’t be doing this at top speed, but it’s not only possible, it’s practical.

The braking is going to come to be the big complaint of the game - I agree, though, it’s pretty rough. The first time I did a full 360+ spin-out when I tried to turn a corner doing the in-game equivalent of about 30 mph, I thought “Cool! They’ve really tweaked the brakes so that shitty cars break terribly for more realistic handling.” Then after a few hours of gameplay, I realized that even the vehicles with the best handling brake like they’re in ice skates. I’m almost wondering if they’re going to release a patch for it - it’s that extreme.

You get used to the driving. Try breaking in a straight line before the intersection to make the turn. Even the beaters can get going faster than you think they can, what they DON’T seem to do is brake as well as the sports cars.

I agree it is “floaty” though. I had some beater honest to God get air going 20 MPH over a small bump. I mean I’m sure the hump loaded the springs, but DAMN!

I also agree guns are at a premium. Maybe I just remembered where they were in SA and VC so it SEEMS like there are less, but I bought the strategy guide it it looks like there are only 2-3 automatic rifles on the entire first island. My main source so far has been leftovers from that drug guy’s side missions. The gun store is too expensive to outfit yourself every time either.

What I’m wondering is how much the choices you make end up effecting the ending…

Evidently you get to choose between killing characters and it effects later gameplay. I wonder if it’s only marginally different (one safe house versus another) or if there are very real differences).

If you do enough friend activities with Little Jacob (it’s really not all that many), he’ll be your gun dealer. You call him up and he meets you at a location of his choice and sells you guns at a surprisingly cheap rate - a fraction of the cost of the ammo stores.

To earn some extra coin to pay for your weapons, steal cars for Brucie once you open up the Internet cafe. You get anywhere from $700 to $1500 a pop for them and can do it as many times as you want, AFAIK. I racked up over $10,000 in about a half hour doing that.

Yeah, the brakes have me chewing at the bit occasionally. However, it’s not so bad later on - or, at least, when you get the wonky handbrake/accelerate/brake/accelerate technique down for 90 degree turns. 180 turns kill me, though. Frequently.

But as I can’t play the game due to it locking up my 360 every ten minutes, anyway, that’s for the future.

Anyone know how to leave cover? I keep pressing RB to leave, but half of the time that puts me in cover in another place. It’s EXTREMELY annoying because half of the time it puts you in some extremely vunerable place, where you can’t even aim at who is shooting you. It’s a major flaw, IMO. How did they not see this?

I either hit the cover button or just walk perpendicular to the surface and I will break off.

Yeah, I also noticed this. The cover feature in tight spaces isn’t perfected.

I had the loading problem again last night, game started, shows the 4 or 5 scenes, then goes to black screen with Loading <name of last save>. Sits there forever, no hard drive light.

I thought it might be the USB box for Rock Band, but that was already unplugged. I also have a USB notebook cooling fan connected and after 3 or 4 reboots tried unplugging that. I eventually got it to load, but I’m not sure what fixed it. This is as bad as PC gaming, you gotta fiddle around to get the game to work when you just wanna unwind and play.

Maybe it is an Internet issue, my Internet is flaky sometimes.

Still having lots of fun, I’ve made it to “Manhattan.” Found a lot of landmarks, except I noticed stuff like Radio City Music Hall seems to be on the wrong side of the street.

It’s the PSN thing. Log out before you start the game and it will work. It’s all over the game forums and has totally fixed my issue of sticking at the load screen.

Is anyone else disappointed with the repetitive missions? I spent a good chunk of my weekend progressing in the story, and I’m still stuck on shitty “enter building, shoot dozens of drug dealers, kill head honcho/steal drugs, evade cops” missions. I’m getting pretty frustrated with this. My only two available missions right now are for the crooked cop and the irishman (who is the crooked cop’s brother…I think), and they both involve me taking down waaay too many baddies. Please tell me the missions get more creative soon.

I’m worried they put so much into making it feel like a real city (which it does, very much so) that they neglected to think of any fun missions.

I do agree that the missions get a bit repetitive but that is normal in a GTA game.
However there are a lot of standout missions.
Just wait till you get to the bank job.

I’m sort of enjoying the missions because they give me a chance to get better at shootouts. So far.

Have you did the missions for the guy who wants all the cars? He’s down near the docks, forget his name, but Roman introduced you to him.

Bruce.

I have done those but now I am getting MMS messages on my phone from a friend of Brucie asking for specific cars.
You only get a location like “towerblock CS4 in this-or-that part of town”.
I have been looking and looking but can’t find the first one.
It doesn’t appear on your radar so you have to visually recognise a car from a tiny picture on your phone.
But it isn’t a real mission, it is just some bonus stuff to get the extra achievements and the 100% complete.

I won’t dig up the post I made a few weeks ago talking about how I didn’t understand the GTA hype, I didn’t really care for them in the past, blah blah, not too excited. I went and fooled around on a friend’s PS3 copy the other night and went out and got a copy for my 360 yesterday morning. Oh my god. I was a fool, this is…this is godly.

I do have a question though. I feel like I’m missing out on a lot already – Roman wanted to go to dinner, but damnit I was already on the way to pick up Michelle for a date. Vlad wanted me to do something, but I was already messing around with the Jamaican guy. When it comes to games that allow roaming and side missions, I am a major completionist freak, and I’m curious as to how missing these little things are going to affect my 100% rate.

Also, I want to buy some nicer clothes. I got a new outfit at the store next to the safehouse, but man, I want a sport coat or something. And sunglasses! Yeah, sunglasses!
