Guardians of the Galaxy [Spoilers, I imagine]

I’m putting in my Adam Warlock prediction (as Quill’s dad) now. Intimately connected to the arc they’re putting together. Kind of angelic-looking. Has to be brought in at some point to make the Infinity Whatevs arc work anyway, why not make him play a dual role?

I prefer the theory that Starlord’s dad is Starfox --Thanos’ brother in the comics.
His super power is literally seduction.

That would be awesome.

This made sense to me. The goal of Ronan was to get onto the surface of the planet so he could activate the infinity gem. “Get onto the surface of the planet” is probably an attack vector the Nova never really considered before because there’s no reason anyone would ever do it unless they had an infinity gem.

It’s plausible that most space combat would be done in deep space and that most of Nova’s military capabilities were out there.

I am not sure you could call Youndu a softee but he definitely seemed to care more for Peter than he let on publicly.

That’s a good possibility, but they haven’t really cinematized the Eternals yet. As far as their cinematic continuity goes so far, Thanos is just an extremely powerful alien and the rest of the Eternals (Earth, Titan, or otherwise) haven’t really made an appearance.

The Nova Corp did have fleets and space outposts; they probably didn’t have a huge military just sitting on top of their capital for these occasions - as we’ve seen, the fighters are probably more often used for policing purposes.

This was basically the outer space equivalent of a terrorist with a bomb.

I didn’t not like it, but I certainly didn’t love it. It’s fine. Only one of the quips made me laugh out loud, the plot was stupid and derivative, the characters were Meh (except for Groot), and the bad guys were boring as hell. Still, it’s slightly enjoyable if you want to turn off your brain and watch stuff blow up.

Which?

I laughed quite a few times, most often at Rocket Raccoon. (Yeah, I’m a furry…)

Starlord’s comedic timing didn’t do much for me… but that was OK, because Rocket was more than picking up the slack. And Ronan’s motivation was admittedly a bit one-dimensional, but it was fully believable, and it worked just fine-- Certainly a lot better than the purely nihilistic dark elves of Thor 2.

Oh, and in the department of “trailer lines that didn’t make it into the film”, we also have “A thief, two thugs, a murderer, and a maniac”.

EDIT: Also, someone upthread mentioned the shot of Gamora zipping up her suit. It was in there, but didn’t show any more than the trailer did, and I think the trailer slowed it down, too. It was a literal blink-and-you-miss-it. It was during the sequence where they’re explaining the plan and the protagonists are all getting ready for it.

I think they were referring to this shot of Gamora, which I’m pretty sure wasn’t in the movie.

Celestials are generally about 2000 ft tall and covered in armor. Knowhere is the severed head of a celestial. If all their body parts are of a similar scale, not sure it would be physically possible.

The Guardians are supposed to be loveable losers; the sort-of lame one-liners are deliberate. That’s part of their charm. And I think that Marvel has been very shrewd positioning them so in contrast to the more glib charm of the Avengers.

The giant head that they made Knowhere (the space station) into was a Celestial’s head. And the really big guy that the Collector shows using an infinity stone to destroy a world is another Celestial. They’re really, really BIG. So the mechanics of a Celestial impregnating Peter’s mother would be… awkward.

edit: ninja’d! Wasted too much time looking for the name of the Celestial cameo…

Oh, and about Starlord literally trolling the dude with the whistle-arrow: It’s obvious that the affection goes both ways. He could have just left the containment capsule empty, but he put in it something from Earth, which he was carrying on him, and which thus almost certainly has sentimental value to him. And he knows that it’s also the sort of thing the bandit would like, given what he puts on his control console.

Speaking of such matters, does anyone have any guesses what he put in the containment capsule he gave to Nova? Or did he not bother with anything in that one, since he expects they’re Lawful enough not to actually open it to check?

You think he still has the stone? I guess it fits his personality, but I’m not sure he really wants A) the responsibility that comes with that power and B) the heat from everyone chasing him again.

Saw it. Great movie. No sequel needed. It works well as a standalone.

Mayhaps not needed but certainly desired!

That’s a good point, considering that Yondu must have lost a lot of his “bobblehead collection” in the crash of his personal fighter. He retrieved the Xandarian Swarovski-equivalent trinket he took from The Broker (the jeweler/fence Quill tries to sell to initially), but as far as I can tell that’s the only thing that made it.

The sequel is coming whether it needs one or not.

Except, of course, that it’s one part of a rather long and involved arc and they’re going back into space for that, so there WILL be at least one Guardians sequel. Which is absolutely fine by me. Anything that keeps Chris Pratt 40 feet high in front of my eyes is a good thing.
