Guess what 60 Minutes decided to do last night? (Answer: Benghazi)

What is the Bill of Rights for, then?

If you want to talk about the previous subject, no problem. I’m willing to take my lumps.

Besides, do you really want me starting a new thread? I figure you’d rather keep me contained to the few threads I inhabit.

The Bill of Rights recognizes God-given rights, it does not grant them. Which again, is why many of the founders didn’t want a Bill of Rights. They were afraid that people like you would regard them as rights given by a benevolent government that could be rescinded by said government.

It does no such thing. It provides a framework for the review of legislation by the courts. You think God granted us the right to trial by a jury of no less than six people?

God works in mysterious ways.

The only right that conservatives think that God actually granted is the right to possess as much firepower as one wants.

(emphasis added)

So, does this mean you’ve dropped your “Voting ain’t a right” nonsense?

There are some legal specifics in there, no doubt. Surely the 10th amendment doesn’t contain natural rights, it simply lays out the federalist nature of the republic. However, the primary purpose of the Bill of Rights was to recognize natural rights, and this is further expounded on in the 9th amendment, which makes it clear that our rights are not limited to just what is spelled out.

Many of us also defended the 1st amendment against the concerted attack liberals have made on it in the name of campaign finance reform.

42Fish, let’s first agree on what a “right” is before I concede anything.

I define a right as something that applies to everyone. Voting fails on this count.

I define a right as something that government cannot take away by simply passing a law doing so. Voting also fails on this count.

So, there’s no right to keep and bear arms, because it doesn’t apply to everyone. Done deal.

I must say, you are consistently amusing and those reflex reactions are in fine shape, indeed. Yes sir, God intended for corporate power to decide elections.

I will give Adaher mad props for possibly the single greatest goal-post move in the history of the SDMB by a completely discredited poster.

So close to the right answer and yet so far.

The difference between freedom of speech (for instance) and voting is that freedom of speech extends to non-citizens who live in the US.

Voting, however, is a right only for US citizens. Which is why it’s “the most important right granted to U.S. citizens.” (According to the INS, at least.)
Perhaps you should warm up with one of their less tricky questions. How about: “How many stars are on the US flag?”

Adaher: As long as it’s not discriminatory based on race, it’s legal.

You might remember, there was also a time when de wimmins wasn’t allowed to vote neither.
Just you, being wrong again

C’mon, now that the “Benghazi bombshell” has turned into a punchline, what else can he do?

“Lara Logan”: Mayor Rob Ford. Patriot. Hero. Role model. Tonight, he’ll tell a side of the story you have to hear to believe. So Mayor Ford, once and for all, what is the truth?
“Rob Ford”: I have never done crack.
“Lara Logan”: I believe you.
“Rob Ford”: I’ve also never smoked pot.
“Lara Logan”: I believe you.
“Rob Ford”: (tentative, unsure he can get away with this one) And I’ve never had alcy-hol…?
“Lara Logan”: (mock-scolding tone) Mayor Ford…? (reverts to bubble-headed bleach blonde who comes on at five tone) I believe you.

Boredom is a cruel mistress.

I hear it’s just passed through the heliopause.

You should start a new thread because this is a different discussion unrelated to the thread title. Also, you will continue to get “moving goal posts” accusations.

This is of course just in my opinion, I am not a mod nor am I trying to junior mod.

Perhaps we need a jr. mod disclaimer:
