You say this as if Bozo the Clown wasn’t also pure genius .
Amazing. The mind-blowing hype, the practically scripted shortages, the midnight vigils, and a tiny handful of confirmed titles, the vast majority of which will eventually be sold back…this is exactly the same thing that happened with the Playstation 2.
I was there. Store after store with a tiny handful of peripherals and not a whiff of a system, all the while the media blitz was going at about warp 10. A new scam seemingly every week (like the E-bay seller who manage to finagle several hundred dollars for an PS2 box). I found the whole experience utterly surreal. Which was soon replaced by sickening.
One year. One entire freakin’ year from the announce date before I was able to get my hands on one.
And now the XBox 360 is following the same script virtually word-for-word.
At this point, I’m firmly in the “whatever” camp. If a total fanatic wants to camp out for hours and shell out a thousand bucks for a system that’s worth at most a fifth as much, hey, your funeral. I’ve indulged in more than a few questionable purchases of my own; I’m not going to rip on someone else’s passion.
As for smashing a system, I think that’s just stupid. Look…what you do is take the system out of the box, put something else in, and smash only the box and whatever you put in it. Sheesh, COMMON SENSE, people. Yeah, it’s a little more work and it takes longer, but what’s a few more minutes to a fanboy?
My best friend’s brother is a producer for a TV show that reviews video games, and as such has gotten himself an advance unit (free, IIRC), which he hauled up for Thankgiving to show off to the family. They were teasing him to hock it on ebay and run away with his fortune.
(My job never gives me neat things. Sadly, no lucrative secondary market has every developed for your odd 300 page securities prospectus, no matter how gripping a page turner it may be)
Heh, that made me laugh. So many ways the OP could have ended:
So sure was I that a sentence along those lines was on its way that I laughed out loud at the actual ending. Great Pit material.
