Guess what was in our chimney

Last night my gf heard something “scratching” in our chimney. I didn’t have my hearing aid in, so I heard nothing, but she was very concerned. I assumed her concern was about whether or not the flue was closed, so I carefully checked using my headlight. Closed.

Turns out her concern was more for the “poor helpless animal” that was stuck. I feared a bat. She wanted me to rescue whatever it was. So I cautiously opened the flue, then quickly closed it again.

What do you think I saw?

Hints:

  1. Was not a bird or bat
  2. Was not a bear
  3. There was more than one
