The only thing I see missing is “Pan’s Labyrinth” at the very end. There’s a Mummy and the Invisible Man standing together during the pan, is that a reference to a meeting of these two that I don’t recall?
I was also pleased to see the Phantom of the Paradise. Given that the movie is coming up on 40 years old, and did not do terribly well upon release (except, apparently, in Winnipeg), I wonder how many got that reference?
They missed (at least) two references, I think. The soldiers firing across the fence at zombies is possibly a reference to 28 Days Later. Also, there is a brief shot of the house from Psycho behind Lard Lad (at 0:23).
Or could it be World War Z? I didn’t see either one.
Oh, and as a minor quibble on two Lovecraft points: it says Lovecraft is the author of Cthulhu, but there’s no single work called Cthulhu (there is one named Call of Cthulhu). He’s the creator of Cthulhu. And Cthulhu doesn’t appear in Lovecraft’s “At the Mountains of Madness.” I got the feeling he might have been worked into the movie Del Toro planned - I still hope that happens but I think it’s dead - but the story features Elder Things and Shoggoths. You know what- I guess I’m wrong. Elder Things and Shoggoths are the only living creatures that appear in the story but others are mentioned.
At least one of the devices on the conveyor belt with Maggie is from Cronos, his first movie. $7 to become a vampire, huh?
Moe should’ve been the Omega Man guy, or is that too explicit? I assume the skeletons at the end were Harryhausen from Jason and the Argonauts maybe?
May have been mentioned: what is Homer’s mouth from? Also, is the Wiggum as a cyclops/ogre from something, an earlier episode?
I like the little touches, like Ralph’s head trying to eat, Carl adding a moustache, or Hitchcock being a dick. Smithers is of course, umm… one of the fairies.
Thanks, that was bugging me. Too bad Morbo didn’t get a cameo. That stupid frog probably didn’t want to share the stage ![]()
From The Mole People, google tells me.
Big list I found (I found it after I typed everything out except for the last one, I swear).
Shorter list with comparison pictures.
John Carpenter’s Thing from Another World? When the alien morphed from the dog?
According to the video he’s a creature from Blade II. Makes sense since Carl dresses himself as Blade right after Homer runs away.
Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, the video says.
I knew I’d seen that toad somewhere!
I remember that movie from when I was a kid, saw a listing for it on cable a few months back and watched part of it. Some things are better left to childhood embellishment. Gah it’s awful. I do love the Lincoln though.
I don’t know if this has been addressed but I am 99% sure it is a reference the uber vampires from Blade II.
Yeah sounds like it, considering Carl’s reaction. And that’s the only Blade movie I’ve actually seen :smack: I don’t remember the tentacle, nor the “wings” being that big. I guess the inanimate radioactive rod made me think radiation monster.
That was the best opening I’ve ever seen for the Simpsons and I especially liked del Toro’s inclusion of Cthulhu and HP Lovecraft.
Okay, that Dr. Seuss parody was the best The Simpsons has been in a while.
The Dr. Seuss parody was very good and I got a kick out of Lenny and Carl as pinheads. But the opening sequence was the star of the episode and it looked even better on a big screen. I hadn’t noticed that some of the fairies got killed by the TV bug-zapper style.
I’m trying to figure out the reference at the end. Bart looked to me like Mr. Tumnis is The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, but I didn’t get the rest, and the annotated version didn’t say anything.
As for the show, the Freaks parody was dead-on.
I think it was from Pan’s Labyrinth.
The Creature from the Black Lagoon also made an appearance.
I missed it! Does anyone know if there will be a rebroadcast (or where I might find it online)?
