After sitting spellbound through “Pan’s Labyrinth”, I would love to see del Toro’s earlier movie “The Devil’s Backbone”.
However, I’ve heard that the english subtitles are rubbish. Apparently they were so bad that del Toro insisted on writing the text for the “Pan’s Labyrinth” subtitles himself.
Does anyone know if they subtitles for “Devil’s Backbone” were updated for any of the DVD releases?
My wife and I just got this from Nexflix and watched it this weekend (Nowhere near as good as Pan’s though). We noticed quickly that the subtitles appeared at the wrong times, with a lag of a line or two. A character would say something, with no subtitles appearing, and the next character who spoke would have the first character’s subtitles. It happened quite a few times and was incredibly annoying. I had assumed that it was a glitch in the DVD or something, but now…
I don’t remember the subtitles being a problem, or not big enough to spoil the movie, which I thought was excellent. It’s not as flashy as Labyrinth, but it’s creepy and effective.
I saw this movie last week with my dad, and didn’t notice a problem. Aside from the fact that the subtitles appear in the black bar at the bottom, meaning they were almost entirely cut off on my widescreen TV. Had to watch it at a much reduced size in order to understand the dialogue.
My dad, who speaks fluent Spanish, didn’t say anything about the subtitles not matching the speech, but he probably wasn’t looking at them too closely.
