Guilty Food Pleasures and Recent Addictions

I too am a pumpkin pie/holiday person! Only from Halloween through Thanksgiving though. XMas brings out a whole other realm of sweet heavenly goodness.

My “thing” lately has been mashed potatos. The restaurant next to my work makes wonderful champ, laden with butter and scallions. Makes my tummy happy. I’ve been using baby red taters, peeled hapahzardly, mashed by hand (so some lumps!). Toss in some bacon, sharp cheddar cheese, butter… ~drool~

Last night we went to our local mom-n-pop grocery store. I had never noticed the cooler by the bakery. Shining gloriously at me was a package of bakery homemade napoleons. Cool creamy custard, with just a bit of sweetness. Tissue thin pastry. Heaven.

I am loving Yves veggie dogs right now with mustard and ketchup cooked on the bbq. I go through phases where I love them, like now, and phases where I can’t stand them.

And carrots, right now I love carrots, but I think I might be eating too many of them, so I am trying to develope a taste for celery, but …yuck.

Buttermilk and jerk chicken…not necessarily together…I love buttermilk and don’t keep it in the house often 'cause I’ll drink it right out of the carton…jerk chicken - family doesn’t like spicy food so, once in a while, I’ll do jerk chicken for myself…mmmmmmmmmmmm

Take equal parts butter and peanut butter, and mix with enough maple to make it easily spreadable, and then slather over hot biscuits.

Peek Freans Digestive Biscuits!

They’re good by themselves, but even better if you make jam (or marmalade!) sandwiches out of them. Of course they need to be done right, with the flat face inside and the bumpy face out. I find that the prep increases the anticipation. I could nibble on them all day.

Snyders of Hanover Cheddar Cheese Pieces - Chunks of sourdough hard pretzels bursting with authentic sharp cheddar cheese taste.

I’m not sure when these became my new favorite junk food. I just can’t resist their salty cheesiness goodness.

Sweet Gherkins–I can eat an entire jar in one sitting. Mmm. I love 'em.

Frozen berries (blueberries, raspberries, blackberries) with Real Maple Syrup poured over them. Yummmmmmmmm…

And I have to stay away from those packages of cheesestraws that are in the supermarkets now. I can eat a whole package in one sitting EASILY. And they’re totally not on my diet.

Cheddar Triscuits.

Oh dear God are they good. I’ll throw a handful on my plate with my sandwich in place of potato chips.

Sonic Sausage Toasters.

Two pieces of toast, sausage, fried egg, and cheese.

Also, root beer floats.

  • Pasta with sesame oil and freshly grated truffle. (That’s a really guilty plea$ure.)
  • Roasted red pepper and avocado on a toasted “everything” bagel slathered with cream cheese.
  • Vanilla yogurt with frozen mixed berries (thawed) drizzled with honey, mixed with Grape Nuts

Darnit, I’m hungry now.

Ever since I gave up smoking (pauses to wait for applause from assembled mightily impressed masses to die down) I have something bordering an obession with dried figs. I especially like the baby figs that you can buy in a little circle of dired figgy goodness. The best is when they’re still soft in the middle, then you can bite off one end and squeeze all the sticky inards out, oooohh.

Here in Hungary most of the food is really great- much of it better than the stuff you get in the U.K- but I must say the Hungarians can’t make cheese for shit- plus the stuff they import from abroad is catered to their own tastes- which seems to run to cheese that tastes like solid blocks of water. As a result, whenevr I go back to England I totally overdose on the strongest mature Cheddar I can find- Cheese and pickle sarnies, cheese on toast, cheese and biscuits, cheese with cheese- man, I love that stuff.
