Guitar Hero 3 Controller

Does anyone know if there are significant differences between the Guitar Hero 2 and 3 controllers? I just got my husband Guitar Hero 3 for Christmas, but it turns out we both like to play. I was thinking about getting the Guitar Hero 2 bundle for the extra guitar. Is it pretty close or should I wait for the stand-alone Guitar Hero 3 controller to come out? We have a Playstation 3 if it matters.

The fact that you have a PS3 matters a lot because there is no Guitar Hero II bundle for the PS3.

There is a Guitar Hero II bundle for the PS2, but that is a wired guitar and it requires an additional doohickey to work in the PS3.

You’d probably be better off just waiting, unless you don’t mind the wireless and can track down a PS2-to-PS3 adapter doohickey.

You could also get Rock Band, which is available for the PS3. As of this date, the GHIII guitar will not work with Rock Band, but Harmonix is negotiating to be able to release a patch for it that will allow the PS3 guitar from GH3 to work with Rock Band.

I just got the Rock Band bundle today with the drums. My family had a hoot with it all night.

I have an XBox 360 with Rock Band. As expected, the RB strat crapped out tonight, so I bought a GH2 Xplorer as opposed to the GH3 Les Paul controller. I like the look of the Les Paul, but other forums have mentioned problems with the fact that the detachable neck can create connection problems. I’ve read several posts where the player’s GH3 controller was dropping notes due to a disconnect at the neck with the main body of the guitar.

Driving home with my GH2 controller, I did the math and counting GH1, GH2, GH 80’s, GH3 and Rock Band, I’ve bought seven video game guitar controllers. I say go with what works: the single-piece, older GH2 Xplorer over the cooler-looking GH3 Les Paul.

If you step up to Rock Band, your GH2 Xplorer will serve you well when (not if) your RB guitar goes south. Typical failure is the strum bar fails to recognize down strums after as little as a few hours of play.

BTW, I just ordered replacement drums and a replacement guitar for RB after having some friends over. The game is the heat, but the hardware is for crap. Still happy I bought it though.

Actually, there is a super simple 5-minute fix you can use to adjust the pins in the removable neck of the Les Paul so that it snaps together tight and you never have notes drop again.

My guitar is now perfect. I’ve played all of the guitars for PS2 and 360 and once it’s fixed, in my opinion, the 360 Les Paul blows all others away. Especially that piece of junk Rock Band guitar. The Les Paul has a great look and feel. And perhaps most importantly, it’s wireless. Having played wireless, I’ll never go back to a wired controller. Especially the Xplorer, which has a tacky look to me.

The wireless controller makes you feel more like you are just wearing a guitar rather than leashing yourself to your XBox.
