I’d like to attach bottle caps to my guitar strap for decorative purposes. What a good way to do this? Rivets? And where do I get a rivet machine? Glue? Something else?

Any hardware store or home improvement bigbox will sell you a Pop-rivet® gun pretty cheaply. If you drop by a furnace-air conditioning (HVAC) shop in the morning, before all the service guy go out to their jobs, one of them might do your riveting for the price of the rivets.
Folks at a crafts store, such as Hobby Lobby, probably have half a dozen ways to solve your problem.
Pop a couple holes in them and sew them on like buttons.Awl,Dremel,brad and hammer,etc.
Watch you don’t scratch the finish on your axe.
