I thought better of you than that. That is quibbling at its worst. The word did not appear in a vacuum. It was directed at anyone who would be evil and stupid enough to want to own an AR-15 like the OP. And no I don’t own one
So it’s not a rule you can start the thread but it will get shut down or moved so don’t start one but there isn’t a rule against it. Splunge. Got it.
What a fragile creature the gun advocate is.
If I call car a shitty name, am I being cruel to those that want it? Possibly. But if you’re policing that, then nothing whatsoever can be criticized.
“The movie Prometheus is poorly written.”
“How dare you mock Prometheus fans!”
Yeah ok. I know you read above a 5th grade level so you must be playing dumb.
I think the best strategy here is to simply move every and all gun threads to The Pit.
I have an alternate suggestion: create a special rule that allows Oakminster to say “gun grabber” to his heart’s content, wherever and whenever and at whomever he likes, if it will get him to shut the fuck up about this “issue.”
Slightly unorthodox, yes, but desperate times > desperate measures.
Must be.
No need to do that if moderation can be tightened - and by that I mean cutting down on the nameslinging by BOTH sides. There have actually be a few rather civil gun threads in both Great Debates and IMHO recently, and I’d like to see that trend continue. The Pit’s always there for those who’d prefer hurling invectives over reasonable discourse.
Perhaps the GUN FORUM wasn’t such a bad idea after all. But I think we can kill two birds with one stone here, and open a GUNS and ISRAEL/PALESTINIAN FORUM. One thread each, no rules and no moderation.
[Modding]
Knock it off.

No, you don’t. Which is why I think it’s odd that you’re treating a mod note about tone as some kind of harsh punishment. It’s not a mark on your permanent record, and I mean that literally since we don’t keep track of them. I gave a note to try to keep a thread on-topic and keep personal comments to a minimum. I modded your comment about “gun grabbers” and a post that described an anti-gun control argument as “stupid,” and I thought that was more than enough to forestall any claims of bias.
Unlike this post about the AR-15, it applied to other posters as well as non-posters. I understand the objection to RickJay’s comment, but he didn’t insult anyone or call anyone evil.
They certainly are. The problem is that your question ought to be directed to them in the first place since it has nothing to do with my mod note on “gun grabbers” from last month.
I agree, but you are occasionally going to see some differences when you’re talking about judgment calls. I modded your post because it was about people, and I expected posters to object and wanted to forestall that. RickJay’s comment was about a gun.
He did not call anyone stupid or evil.
How about a voluntary exclusion of terms like “screeching”, “whining”, “shrill” and the like?
It’s sort of a missed opportunity that this thread wasn’t called “Gun Grabber 2: Grab Harder.”
Oakminster,
While I agree with your position on Marley’s moderation of “gun grabber”, as well as your position on this board’s moderation in general—particularly Marley’s which is as anti-helpful as it is childish and biased—I think you weaken your case by pointing to this example that you did. I was with you 100% on your original complaint. This, meh.
Maybe “Gun Grabber 4: Live Free or Grab Hard.”
“Bugaboo” would’ve been more accurate, at least.
You are right. I could have gotten my point across in a much better manner. My appologies.
I am an MPSIMS mod and I didn’t think it needed any comment from a moderator for two reasons. First, no poster was directly insulted using this term. Second, it springs from a recent event and gets the point across that this model was used in a grade-school shooting. His argument is that because this gun was used, interest in it has risen. This is his opinion, and while some find the term distasteful, we don’t police for taste … remember I was taken to task for moderating people for cracking jokes after the theater shooting. I felt they were in poor taste, but no, that’s not a moderator’s job and I was persuaded to agree.
For those who think moderation was necessary, what would be the reprimand? The thread had not yet gotten off track when I saw it.
How about:
The Pit is a couple of forums down. Keep it MPSIMS-appropriate.
Clearly what was needed was some type of Second Amendment Solution.
Turn the moderators and administrators into an armed well-regulated militia?
I’d like to see well-regulated use versus subjective and inconsistent use of the concealed weapons of Notes and Warnings.
