Gun people, requesting help

Where’s the profit come in? Neither your OP nor any other post above says any more about that. Are you going to look for some kind of related employment? For maximal fun AND profit, maybe you could hire on as a mob hit-[del]man[/del]person. Any idea what they pay?

We could be like a professional Bonnie and Clyde! Or like Grosse Point Blank.
I will try all of your suggestions. In answer to some of the questions, when we had the trouble, the range officer loaned us some lube and helped us check the gun, etc. We tried some other ammo but he also went out yesterday and bought some higher quality ammo - I can’t remember what kind it was, but I immediately noticed the difference. The first kinds we bought were in a big ol’ bulk pack; these are individually sorted into a little package. We are going to buy another magazine or two.

If the gun comes back by the weekend we plan to hit the range again. There’s one over in MA that has open hours, and we’ll go there.

No need to worry, though, as I said, it hasn’t turned me off in the least. On the contrary, it’s been a good experience, too, to know what can go wrong, and if it must go wrong, thankfully it went wrong with a .22.

And yes, I want my own pet gun now. It’s like tattoos. You get one, and you’re like, what’s the big deal, bitch?

I told 'ya, 'Mika, Resistance is Futile

It’s too late for you now anyway, you’re infected with the Wanmoregunitis virus, the only cure is to buy more guns, ammo, targets, supplies and such, just give in to the virus, it always wins and is incurable

Sigh… So I’ve noticed:

Start with Ruger Mark III 22/45 semi-auto

See, fall in crazy love with, buy Colt Woodsman Match Target (First Series) .22 semi-auto

Trade Ruger in on CZ Lux .22 rifle

Google .22 revolvers, stare longingly at Colt Frontier Scout Buntline, Colt Police Positive; plan trip to local dealer for a chat…

Just an FYI Anaamika, MA is one of the most gun restrictive states in the country. Non-residents are allowed to possess rifles & shotguns in the state, but only in narrowly limited situations. You must be at, or travelling to or from, a firing range, hunting trip, or gun show or exhibition. You must also keep the gun unloaded and in a locked case in the trunk of your car (or otherwise inaccessible to the driver while driving). I’d also suggest not making any other stops in MA while you’ve got a rifle in your trunk - the exemption the law applies to non-residents “traveling to or through the commonwealth” - you don’t want to wind up having to argue whether stopping for lunch means you’re no longer “traveling”, and now are in possession of a rifle illegally.

Non-residents can’t buy ammo in MA either, so make sure you bring plenty!

Full law is here.

Thanks - I’ve got no problems with keeping it locked in my trunk. I already have to do that in NY as well, so no big deal. And the place is just over the border, so we can just do our other stops in-state.

Maryland’s restrictive gun laws are being found to be unconstitutional. It is only one federal judge’s recent ruling, and only on part of the law, but here is another recent Dope thread on Maryland gun laws in case you missed it.

That’s cool, but Maryland is MD, and isn’t a commonwealth.

Mika, the best advice for any gun owner is to just avoid Nannychusets and any other state that does not respect your rights as a gun owner

Sadly, as you have discovered, New York also qualifies as a Nannystate

Easiest way to determine if your state is a Nannystate? If it rates highly on the Brady antigun website, I’m not linking to it, don’t want to increase their page hit counter, but the guideline is, the closer to 0% your state is, the better it is for gun owners

MA, NY, CA, IL, DC, NJ, MD, in no particular order. And the rest of S. New England too to some extent, RI, CT, etc. Not VT or NH.

 Or you could ignore silly advice that you completely change your entire living situation and lifestyle based on your newest hobby.

Yes, I live in a nannystate. Yet somehow, I’ve legally got a safe full of guns that would make Sarah Brady stroke out, and legally have zero difficulty taking them to the range on a regular basis.

To clarify, I was referring to gun owners visiting a Nannystate, not ones who live there…

As a Maine resident, I have no problem traveling into NH or VT with a firearm safely secured and unloaded in the trunk, but there’s no way I’d go into Mass with a gun in my trunk

Sorry if I offended anyone from a gun restrictive state

Besides, it’s fun to send the Brady Bunch into epileptic fits no matter what state you live in  I just wish that Maine rated lower on the Brady bunch list, I want Maine to be ZERO, dammit!

Well, I rather like NY, and we’ll be living here for a bit longer, so no worries. But MacTec, I won’t be able to avoid MA all the time - it’s the closest open range with reasonable hours to us (and it’s still about 1 hr 20 minutes away!) It’s just life.

Well, the Brady rating for CA is a bit higher than NY, and CA is very clear on their trunk laws. I don’t know if I’d feel as comfortable driving in NYC (and that’s not just with a firearm…), but is NYS really that bad, as in anecdotally/newsworthy?

It is fairly difficult to get a pistol permit, so I hear, and much harder to get a concealed carry. I don’t want a concealed carry, and I am not in the market at this point to get a pistol permit.

But we bought our first gun with no issues. They did the criminal check in less than five minutes and there no was no waiting period of any kind. So it doesn’t seem that hard, really.

Sorry, I was specifically asking about trunk laws or actual reports of NY LEOs ignoring that a gun is locked up.

Both CA and NY are of the mind: “Sure, someone can come in and we’ll give them CCW. Oh, are you asking? Someone besides you. And you. And you.” IOW, legal, but good luck getting them if you aren’t important. May depend on county.

CA has a 10 day waiting period. I only did it once, to buy a gun that is currently 72 years old. Otherwise, just a little more paperwork. I don’t recall if they did NICS while I was there.

FWIW, I know several shooters who legally transport a handgun from NH into MA every week for shooting competitions, and none of them have ever had an issue.

I didn’t intend for my previous post to scare you, and I’m relieved it didn’t. I just wanted to make sure you were aware of the laws, so you didn’t innocently wind up doing something that would cause you a problem. Like realizing you have no ammo after your 80 minute drive.

Just out of curiosity, Muldoon, gun owner to gun owner and all that, what are the gun laws in Mass actually like for a recreational sport shooter? Y’know, fighting ignorance and all that…

Here in Maine, the laws for transport are basically unloaded, and inaccessible, put it in the trunk, no loaded mags accessible in the passenger compartment

Purchasing is equally easy, find what you like (21 for handguns), fill out Fed form 4417, wait 5 to 15 min. Depending on backlog, when approved, pay for the purchase and leave the same day, no waiting period, no permit needed unless you want to carry concealed, Maine is a “shall issue” state, as long as you’re not a felon, they have to issue a permit

I wanted to post and update everyone. I did indeed buy the Savage Arms Mark II bolt action .22. This past weekend we went out in the deep woods armed with apples and tin cans and water bottles and had a great time shooting and blowing stuff up. We cleaned up after ourselves and picked up all of our brass and I love my gun. I really love the bolt action on it; it’s very smooth.

So, thanks again!

Any profit yet? Yeah, I didn’t think so. It’s ok.

Now to pull you deeper into the dark side. Let’s make your rifle nice and quietso’s you don’t bother anyone!
Notice the bullet impact is as loud as the gun itself. It’s just so cool!
Oh, wait. You live in New York. Charlie Schumer and his friends don’t want you to have one. You’re not responsible enough.

I’d move to CT or NH if I were you!
