Morning, mumpers! It’s currently 12c/53f with a predicted high of 14c/57f and cloudy. Weather app says “Stratus clouds are known for producing light rain or snow. They’re also knobjockey twatfaces.”
Over here this week we are celebrating Guy Fawkes, often referred to as the only person ever to enter parliament with good intentions. Celebrations involves bonfires and fireworks, and used to also include burning a guy, usually made out of old clothes and stuffed with newspaper. That’s kind of fallen out of favour now, for obvious reasons.
So, are you celebrating anything this week? There’s one celebration that I’m aware of - happy birthday, FCD!"
My wife’s mother is visiting us from the States. My wife is taking her and our two kids on a five-day trip to Paris. I couldn’t get the time off work so I’m staying at home.
Which means I’m about to celebrate four straight evenings of uninterrupted video game time.
It’s grey and gloomy here, but I’m supposed to be in the lab all day anyway. Hopefully I will get this whole mess actually finished this week, but stuff keeps getting complicated.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 42 Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 70 and sunny. The big item on today’s agenda is to get shorn. Both of us need it and I want to be all spiffy when I go hang out with a bunch of Whiskypalians Thursday-Saturday. RDOS inactivities will make up the rest of the day. Well, part of it as sup will require effort. It will be cubed steak, rice ‘n gravy, butterbeans, cabbage and cornbread.
BooFae “the only person ever to enter parliament with good intentions” gave me a good first thing in the mornin’ laugh!
**HAPPY BIRTHDAY FCD!**
shoe to answer your question from last night, acolyte is a volunteer thing. Some kids want to and some don’t. I have known parents who lean on their kids to do it, but, IMO, that could make the kid not only not like doin’ it but not like church as well. The age to start can be eight or nine dependin’ on the individual kid. High skool gradjooashun is when one ceases.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then if we are to be shorn, I suppose I must purtify and don acceptable attire for bein’ amongst the great unwashed. Bother!
And welcome to Monday. Not sure what’s going down this week other than two IEP meetings and going to see my Nurse Practitioner. I’m actually looking forward to seeing him. It’s my first appointment since he had open heart surgery. He’s a good guy and I’m always glad to chat with him. Even better if we can figure anything out about my health!
A dear friend of mine who has been fighting cancer for 3 or so years is not doing well. I don’t have any details, but I have my suspicions about what’s going on right now. I hope that I’m wrong. She’s got a daughter graduating high school in the spring. I hope she is going to be here to help celebrate.
When it came to my turn, I found out that I would get out of class while in training so I signed up. I was in the last class of acolytes to learn the Latin responses.
Mornin all - 7am revised standard time in beautiful but deserted Myrtle Beach SC. A bit after sunrise it’s 56/13 outside on the way up to 64/19 later. And mostly cloudy.
I’ll be departing our reunion this morning for the two day drive home. Tonight’s stay is in beautiful St. Augustine FL. It’s far enough south that today will be a long drive (6h plus stops) and tomorrow a short one (4h plus stops). My big goal for today is to buy a stoner sampler at a Cook Out. Tomorrow’s driving goal is to eat something at a Buc-ee’s, though I may kill that square today too. Today’s drive is juuust long enough that two highway-side meals enroute aren’t out of the question. Especially if I don’t try to finish them. Then I’ll have filled my honorary Southerner and trucker squares for the year.
Adding to my redneck cred, yesterday we all attended a jeep rally where hundreds of jeeps were running through a mud pit and climbing obstacles and such while lots of drawlin’ was a-goin’ on on the PA. I used to do off-roading, and late wife actually used to drive a Wrangler as her only car, so we’re not strangers to the scene. Such clean dirty fun.
Ref swampy last week, the Buc-ee’s I stopped at on the way up on Thu was on I-95 adjacent to Daytona Beach FL. It was the first one I encountered northbound. There are of course several along the way, including the one in Brunswick.
In all the reunion was good fun. 4 couples plus me. Darn shame GF had to skip it, but she’s gotten so much done in these days that really needed doin’. One of the husbands was having health problems so although he attended, he wasn’t much in evidence. So his wife and I made a joint drag-along date out of much of the weekend. The fact we’d briefly been BF/GF 40 years ago made it sorta familiar fun. But well-behaved fun.
It looks like I’ll be hosting next year’s event down near me. We’ll see how that shapes up. “Hosting” really means making the final arrangements for a place to stay and acting as the local area expert tour guide for activities. And maybe a party at my place if logistically feasible. Otherwise the host is just one more participant in the yakyak and sloth.
To follow on from the OP, this coming Saturday, London has the annual Lord Mayor’s Show (renamed the Lady Mayor’s Show this year), a mixture of mediaeval pomp and carnival parade, with floats, bands and marching or dancing contingents from any organisation with a connection to the (mediaeval) City and/or the new Lady Mayor’s professional and charitable interests, plus a few commercial promotions.
Since we did breakfast out the other day, I’m not sure if there will be any celebratory events today. Since we’re trying hard not to indulge in sweets, I didn’t bake a cake or pie - maybe I’ll get a cupcake when I go for 'nanners. I do need to find a gift bag, but it’s for the jammies I bought for Tobias. FCD’s jeans were delivered yesterday - I guess they count as his present.
Back in my day, girls weren’t allowed to do anything in church other than occupy pews. Not even choir. The choir leader in our parish would not women or girls join - jerk. OK, I do think they let women come in and dust…
It’s a rainy morning here, tho it’s supposed to be done shortly after 8. It occurred to me as I was abed listening to the pitter-patter that I haven’t been watering my new plantings. So I ordered a couple of impact sprinklers and I’ll be setting up hoses, etc, once they’re delivered. It’s a long way from the house to the hill, hose-wise and I intend to leave a couple attached to the sprinklers so that all I have to do is pull one from the house to the two. We’ll see how that goes. I’ll also set up a reminder on Outlook to water every 2 or 3 days.
Not sure what today’s plans are. FCD is taking the mast and boom this morning to get an estimate and (I hope) leave them to be blasted and powder-coated. I’m thinking I’ll drag hoses when the rain is done. Not sure what else - I’ll make it up as I go along.
Morning everyone. Been gone for a while, partly due to traveling around the square states in the US.
Spent 5 weeks on the road and I have some positive news from the trip. 1) Everyone’s driving more politely now, even the big rigs, and 2) the Trump Burgers restaurant in Bellville Texas closed and re-opened as President Burgers. When we drove by, they had removed all the outside posters of the “Count of Mostly Crisco”. The other Trump Burgers restaurant in Houston closed a while back, because the manager was arrested by ICE and (apparently) is being deported. I swear I’m not making this up. I had actually wanted to eat at one of these just out of curiosity. But I missed my chance I guess.
In other good news, the open air portions of the national parks weren’t closed due to shutdowns – just the buildings and shops. We met my wife’s sister and BIL in Glacier National Park. They are more dedicated hikers and actually encountered a Grizzly and her cubs. Mrs. Bear herded her cubs away down the trail and they (kinfolk) decided to head the opposite direction – back to the RV to drink beer with us instead. The RV park was pretty nice, with restaurants and a beer garden with live entertainment each night. Also hot tubs, saunas, and multiple swimming pools (one was adult only).
We hiked up to some ancient petroglyphs in Utah, and they were weird. Seriously weird. We decided either it was aliens, or the Fremont people had really good weed.
In other news, after returning home we attended our first Strongman competition (as spectators). Got to watch all the events and meet a lot of the competitors. Daughter’s SO was competing and we even wore shirts with “Team [SO name]” and cheered for him. It was a lot of fun, and everyone was surprisingly friendly and approachable. Afterward, we took SO and his friends from the show out to dinner. And we learned that really big guys who’ve been on strict diets for weeks, and have been competing all day by hurling 500 lb weights around, can eat a lot. I mean… a LOT. Thankfully they all chose the “all you can eat” special on the menu, so my wallet survived (barely).
Funny aside: At one point during the show, my wife became alarmed because we’d wandered away from our seats and left her purse on the chair. I pointed out that the local thieves would probably skip a venue filled with giants bench-pressing Subarus.
Oh well, hope everyone has a great week. For me? I’m re-loading the RV for a few weeks fishing in S Texas. This one’s a solo trip. For some reason my wife is OK with all that time by herself with just wine, Netflix and a hot tub for company. Poor thing.
It’s 43°F and cloudy outside. The expected high is around 48°F, and rain is expected to arrive around 6:45 a.m. Of course, I’m sitting here waiting for my friend to show up for mushroom hunting. I don’t know if she’ll cancel or not. I don’t care either way at this point.
Happy Birthday to FCD!
WTF?! This is beyond ridiculous, and I’m sorry this happened to you. I hope you’re doing better today.
Nitpick: A complete sentence includes a subject and a main verb.
Don’t know if Lady SCAdian reset the stove and microwave clocks. I do know that I didn’t. Bedside clock quit doing automatic resets a few years go, and didn’t cooperate at all when I tried to get it to spring forward a few months ago. I just mentally adjust the time whenever I look at it. Computer reset itself fine, but now (0819 local, Monday morning) my phone still hasn’t done so.
Have to try to get to sleep early tonight, as we’ll have to be at the polls at 0515. For some reason they have me scheduled for the morning shift instead of all day, as I’d requested. But Lady SCAdian is down for all day instead of her usual half day, so between us we’ll get the usual amount of pay – possibly even a little more, as she’ll be an asst registrar this time.
Oops – past time to feed the furry little monsters…
Good morning all. Woke to a cramp in my upper leg, it’s fine now but hurt like the dickens getting the leg straightened out. Have a 9am appointment to get my running boards installed at the Hyundai dealer, so it depends how long that takes on how the rest of the day will go. At least there is no rain in the forecast but it’s 42F out there now and will only get to 61F so Fall is not only here, it is firmly entrenched. Probably do one more mowage of the lawn sometime this week and that should be that for the season, I hope. Possibly referee some more soccer (due to the bad weather the tournament had to add games tonight and tomorrow) but we’ll see how it goes.
I guess I’m celebrating the end of the soccer season, been 3 busy months and now…I can rest for a month then indoor futsal starts.
JtC, hope you beat the bad rap.
boo fae, almost wish we had a holiday that featured someone blowing up the government…once upon a time long ago, of course…
Coppertone, I hope they do obey the judge and get the stamps out to you.
Cervaise, sounds like a win-win for everyone (with the possible exception of your wife, since I don’t know here relationship with mom-unit).
swampy, just checked my hair (I pull it down and see if it overlaps my ears) and will need to get it trimmed before Thanksgiving.
Sticky Buns, happy chatting and sorry to hear about friend.
hippie your “I was in the last class of acolytes to learn the Latin responses.” reminded me of being a kid in the Latin Catholic Mass..didn’t know what I was saying, but I could do a mean 'Et cum spiritu tuo" as a response…
Pilot, looking forward to your review of CookOut and Buc-ees food reviews.
FCM, and happy orbit anniversary for FCD.
yanker, good to see you around these parts again. Sounds like a great trip was had and Glacier Park is near the top of my to-do list. And I have never been to a Strongman competition, sounds interesting.
Herald, happy vote riggi…I mean, gathering…
And about an hour to my car appointment, so need to start getting ready to head out. Have a good week all.
Good to see you back yank! Your trip sounds interesting.
Up, caffeinating, breakfasted and fixing to do KP. Today is explore the neighborhood day, so I’ll get out and about this afternoon. I’ll also drop the trash off at the dumpster on the way.
Thanks for the kind words. It was rather unreal, TBH. At least all of the sitting areas were metal or plastic so I wasn’t concerned about bringing bedbugs home with me.
I’m back from my Dr. appt. and that wasn’t great either. Apparently I don’t just have a small tear in the rotator cuff attachment, I have a BIG tear and one of the ligaments is ready to snap, plus some other stuff including bursitis.
He said it looks like part of the damage is from an old injury. About twenty years ago, I dropped my sportster (500+) lbs and tried to hold it up with my right arm, so maybe that’s what happened, I dunno.
He’s going to try to get me in to see an Ortho guy this year, but it is looking like this is going to be a bigger deal than I had hoped.
Yeah, you are going to spend the month in your recliner with your feet up, right? You aren’t fooling anyone, you will just use this as an excuse for more gym time!
I reset our stove clock, we can’t remember how to change the time on the microwave though. Hubs bought it before I got here so we have no clue what happened to the manual and so fr, neither of us have been motivated enough to go online and figure it out.
Thank you for getting out there. Be careful and be safe.
Welcome back, it sounds like you had a great trip!
We were allowed to dust and clean and change those heavy, dusty velvet drapes they put on statues. The women were allowed to take care of the vestments because the boys couldn’t be expected to iron.
That looks like a whole lot of fun! I hope you have a great time and bring back lots of pictures.
I’m glad all went well and hope you have a safe drive home. When will you be seeing GF next? I hope that is soon and relaxing.
Oh, I hope you are wrong as well. Now would be a good time to drop her a quick text, telling her that you are thinking of her with love. Actually, anytime is a good time for that.
You sound like my husband and I hope you killkillkill to our heart’s content. I pulled Diablo Hellfire up yesterday and am having a surprising amount of fun with it. There’s no costume changes, no skins, no setting up skill chains or anything. Its just hack and slash with random treasure chests.
At least you are doing it in the winter, unlike us idiots who try to burn each other’s homes down with bottle rockets in the middle of summer.
I hope you are feeling better and that the cough is gone.
