By the way, if any of you ever thought that the late Gary Coleman (of Diff’rent Strokes fame) sang the line “You gotta keep 'em separated” in The Offspring’s Come Out and Play, that was me. It was my first and only attempt at starting an urban legend. Apologies to all who were affected. But let me know (PM is fine) if you heard that – the research continues.
No, no they are not. Not heavy metal either, just a good, hardworking, hard rock band. Look up hair band sometime. You will not find Def Leppard there. Not only are they too old, their hair was too natural and their music was too legitimate to qualify for that dubious category. But I digress…
One of the few rock bands with dual leads, who were so in synch it was tough to even tell there were two leads at times. Pyromania was a little too poppy for me; I preferred High ‘n’ Dry and some of On Through the Night.
Def Leppard, though I’m familiar/been exposed to both about equally.
I’m 36 and I am really surprised that anyone my age or older would be familiar with Offspring’s poppiest music but not familiar with Def Leppard. They were huge when I was a kid. Also I think there would be a lot of radio overlap in current times, depending on where you live or what formats you come across.
Anyhow, to the OP, I actually thought of Offspring first. I blame it on college and the fact that I could just not get away from the fucking band. I’m 41.
I’m only 3 years younger than you and I don’t think I know any Def Leopard song other than “Pour some Sugar on Me” and I only know that because of VH1 pop-up video. It’s funny how clear the generational dividing line can be sometimes.
The Offspring were awesome and even though PFFaWG was on their obvious money grab album, it’s still the only thing I associate with that phrase. The song was inescapable the year it came out. Also inescapable “Get a Job” which clearly references Obladi Obladah.
To this day I’m slightly disappointed when I hear the German bit and it turns out to be Offspring. And then when it turns out to be “Pretty Fly” I start singing the Weird Al lyrics instead.
It’s not a very strong connection. If you’ve never heard the GGGG phrase before, then it’s just some random piece of German. So the only connection you can make to a song is to some other song that uses some other random piece of German. And for many of us, the only song we know that contains any random German at all is JJJS.
True, and thanks. But…I’d say the Offspring had two hits that a 20-something would likely be aware of, so Kamino Neko has a point. Here’s what happened:
1994: “Gotta Keep 'Em Separated” (still my favorite setting in trochaic tetrameter of a chemistry-set warning label libretto, even if its composer misnamed it “Come Fly With Me” or “Come And Get It” or something): I was 24 years old, living in urban California, into Beck, Boxing Ghandis, and the Peppers, so of course I heard this song on the radio (I didn’t own a TV)…but I never knew until yesterday that it was by a group called The Offspring.
1998: “Pretty Fly for a White Guy”: I was 28 years old, and living much of that year in a hut in a remote jungle village in Mexico, so it’s no surprise I wasn’t aware of this song at the time (much less the name of the group) – a nuclear attack of New York City would have taken a day or two to come to my attention!
So, just one of those happened-to-fall-through-the-cracks things we all have.
