Gustav Meyrink

I read a brief mention of him in a Borges story and was curious enough to look him up. I’d heard of Der Golem but never read it, and I’d never heard anything else about him.

The most interesting-looking book of his in the shop was the The Angel of the West Window, so I got that and the other day finally got around to reading it.

It was an interesting, rather strange book. The plot is hard to define; it involves alchemy, reincarnation (sorta; it’s more complicated than that), John Dee, occult warfare, more alchemy, devil-worship, tantric sex magic and more.

Rather than Borges, I think the author most inspired by Meyrink must be Umberto Ecco. Foucault’s Pendulum especially.
