Once I got to senior level, we used to take school chairs into the showers in summer, unscrew the shower heads, and have a cold stream of water on our shoulder-blades while talking shit.

Back in junior high, this was more of a rumor thing than anything I ever saw happen. You’d hear that so-and-so got a boner in the shower so everyone should make fun of him but, naturally, it was never the popular and athletic kids who had it happen to them. Combined with the previously mentioned fact that spontaneous erections are a thing especially in younger people and it was just one more thing to worry about.
In high school, showers weren’t mandatory and no one used them (there were two small gross stalls with no curtain) so no reason to continue the stories.
I read this four times as “taking a shit” and was so confused and horrified.
Me too! I mean, teenage boys do a lot of crazy things, but this baffled me for a moment.

As has been noted, teenaged boys get erections all the time, for any reason, or no reason at all. I know I did.
Getting an erection in a mandatory school group shower situation was dreaded, and for good reason. One day one guy did have a haphazard semi in the shower where me and a dozen other boys were too, and the mock terror, gay-calling and protracted public humiliation that ensued was terrible to witness.
I recall a naked fistfight in the middle of a group shower between two classmates, one of whom had an erection.

For me the bigger fear was having an erection and then being asked to stand up / join the others in the showers / do star jumps.
Because while I did get involuntary erections, they take a minute to ramp up – it’s not a lightswitch. So if I felt one starting during a shower, I’d just say I was done and exit.

A valid and felt fear, as well.
Also, while a full erection takes a little time, even a hint of a woodie was enough for the peers to start pointing their fingers screaming “GAY!!!”. That only takes a second.

Taking a naked shower with other naked guys in a large room full of showers is way different than pissing in a public restroom. Even if you looked straight forward, you could see things.
Also, 13-yo’s don’t really respect “guy rules” just yet.
Group showers were definitely not a thing when I was 13. No showers after gym. Even if we wanted to take a shower there wasn’t enough time before the next class. My only experience with it was in the Army.
We’ve gone around about showers and gym class and gym clothes a time or three. IIRC we found it varied a lot by region in the US, and also by era.
Dedicated gym classes, gym clothes, locker rooms, and end-of-period group showers were universal in middle school and high school when/where I went through. So the 7 years of 6th - 12th grade. I was one of the youngest for my grade level and for me that was from just after turning 11 to just short of turning 18.
Which meant that most of us started out pre-pubescent and ended up as grown young men.
They were for me and my peers, and mandatory, as well.
