For some reason I remember this absolutely being a fear among guys in high school of having to take the PE shower and accidentally getting an erection while showering, to the point there were “techniques” you’d learn to not get an erection.
The problem I realized now is, why would this be a problem? WHY would I (a straight CIS man) get a boner during a PE shower? I was actually super nervous taking the shower and nervousness is the #1 boner killer (at least for me)
Was wondering if this was a test for other people, and has this ever happened?
Boys, during puberty, tend to get erections randomly. Often for no apparent reason. Being in a shower with a bunch of boys is just as likely to cause an erection as having to give a speech in front of the class. As for nervousness having anything to do with it one way or the other, I suspect that just thinking about it happening is enough to cause it to happen, at least for some people.
You, a straight, cis man, probably won’t, but a straight cis 15 year old boy might.
Also a straight cis man probably shouldn’t be taking a shower with a bunch of naked high school boys.
Do accidental erections actually occur? Really asking because it has never happened to me.
If I get one I know why and it is not an accident. I never get a boner at random. I get it because some woman is turning me on (and that takes a lot more than just seeing a beautiful woman).

I saw a guy with an erection in the shower at a YMCA once. He was late teens or early 20s. I’m not sure if was accidental or not, but he seemed to be trying to hide it. Everyone ignored it.
I have a vague memory of getting one in Geometry class but I am guessing (remembering that class overall) I was bored and daydreaming/fantasizing and I got an erection but I was in my chair and no way anyone else there, who were also bored, noticed. At least, if they did they made no fuss about it to embarrass me.
Still, I would not quite call that accidental for me. Just a lesson to be more careful when daydreaming in class.
As the posters above pointed out, it does happen. Which means it likely happened to me too.
But, at 58 now, that has not happened in several decades.
As for when I was a teen I simply do not remember having spontaneous erections. If they happened (and seems likely they probably did) no one noticed and embarrassed me. That would stick in my memory.
An unnoticed by other people erection when I was 13 is not worth me remembering.
As to the OP it is usually etiquette to not check out other guys in the shower but, of course, it happens as you glance around. If I noticed another guy with a stiffy I would ignore it. If he started masturbating then I would be bothered but not sure what I would do then. I’d be a bit shocked. Gather myself and ask him to stop.
Never, ever seen that happen though (but willing to bet it has happened somewhere).
Hell, I used to get erections when I really needed to pee (apparently, called a “pee boner,” by some), for some reason (internet tells me it’s the bladder pushing against some nerves). Now, on the cusp of 50, not so much. Plus the standard puberty erections which can happen at any time for any reason or none at all.
I’m wondering how our OP was aware this fear was widespread among his peers?
If I had been worried back then (can’t recall but I strongly doubt it) the one thing I’m damned sure of is that I wouldn’t have been discussing it with other boys to learn whether they shared my fear, nor give or get techniques to avert this baleful threat.
This reminds me of a Ray Bradbury story I read that hit me way out of left field. An elderly man wakes up with an erection and promptly rings up all of his old girlfriends (themselves elderly) to come over and see it. The women are delighted! After oohing and ahhing for a while, the ladies go home and the old man revels in the rest of his wonderful day.
Not something I ever thought I’d see from Bradbury. But he had a trait I admire, which is that he’d think of an idea and never appeared to ask himself whether it was a good idea, he would just write it. And because of that story we have all the others I love so well.
As some of you might know, saunas in Germany are almost always nude only and mostly mixed-gender. I have been saunaing regularly since I was about 20, and thus have been among thousands of naked people, some very attractive, and never worried about getting an erection (and never got one) nor have I ever seen another guy having one. It’s just not a sexual situation.
But it doesn’t have to be a sexual situation. Like I said, as an adolescent it was just happen to me. Even in my twenties I’ve have a spontaneous erection creep up on me. I can’t remember specifics but sometimes it has a mind of its own.
Yes, that’s true, I also often had spontaneous erections as a teenager and sometimes in my twenties, but it just never happened to me (or anyone else I was with) in a sauna or group shower.
I am sure I had these as an adolescent, but dont remember it being an issue in the showers. These days I’m more concerned with getting one during a (rare) massage.
