Guys, how do you carry your "accessories"?

A while ago someone started an IMHO poll on “what-all crap do you carry with you all the time?” Lots of people carry cell phones, pocket tools, flashlights, palm pilots, &c, as do I. The ladies I imagine, keep such things in their purse or bag. But how do you fellas schlep all this stuff with you? I don’t like sticking things in my pants pockets, because they make my trousers sag, but I’m finding that keeping them in belt pouches makes me feel dorky. In the cooler seasons I will be able to wear a sport coat, whose many pockets do an ideal job of stashing all my paraphernalia, but for now I’m at a loss.

Merde, that title should read “your” accessories. Any mods in the neighborhod wanna help a brother out?

My boyfriend hangs a lot of crap from his belt. It’s embarassing and I wish he wouldn’t.

Pants and belt. The Leatherman balances the cell, and the pockets hold the keys, knife and the like. If I need more than that it goes into a backpack or the wife’s purse.

I assumed this thread would be about position within ones briefs.

Up and to the left, and thanks for asking!

I used to wear a fanny pack everywhere I went, much to the chagrin of girlfriends and others who had to be seen in public with me.

But a year or two ago I realized I was always wearing the pack AND carrying books around. So I switched to a knapsack.

Items that are always with me:

  • Wallet-keys-cel phone, naturally
  • Leatherman
  • At least one book
  • Clipboard of crossword puzzles
  • Pens and pencils
  • Sunglasses
  • Flashlight
  • Pair of gloves (has come in handy more than once)

When I was stationed in Germany back in the 1970s, a lot of young German men carried men’s handbags. Some GIs picked up the fashion (yep, I had one) because we were used to carrying about 20 pounds of crap in our uniform shirts and pants, and needed someplace to put it all when we were in civvies. Remember, the fashions at the time were really tight every place a pocket would go. Some of the GIs adopted really elaborate bags, including some that were worn like shoulder holsters. Mine was a fairly simple five-pocket job, about half the size of a notebook, with a shoulder strap. It was very plain, masculine and utilitarian, and I carried all kinds of stuff in it that wouldn’t fit in my pockets (I was in the Army, in shape, and those bell-bottoms were tourniquet-tight around my butt.) The best part was that I worked in mufti much of the time, and was allowed to carry the bag as part of my “adaptation to local culture.” Instead of emptying my pockets every night, like I do now, I just put the bag on my dresser and grabbed it the next morning, knowing everything I needed was already in it.

I brought the man-purse back with me, used it a couple of times on trips to the Big City, but my wife made me put it away when her brother made crude remarks about my sexual orientation.

It was actually a pretty good idea – too bad American men are too insecure for manbags to be popular here.

I’ve pared my survival kit down the the bare essentials- money clip (cash, driver’s license, ATM card, insurance card, credit card), keys, Palm, cellphone. Phone goes in front right pocket, money clip in front left. Keys and Palm are hand carried and placed on the table/desk wherever I end up. If I’m more mobile- like shopping at the mall or something- the Palm stays in the car or at home or office, and I suck it up and carry the keys in my hand. Sunglasses stay on my face or rest up on top of my head.

If I’m out with the wife/family, keys go in wife’s purse. I haven’t had a need for a Leatherman or knife on a daily travels-type basis in maybe 15 years, but I keep a minor complement of tools in the car, just in case. Once I let go and tried to live without the items that I previously thought were essential- like knife, etc., I was surprised to learn just how unnecessary they were.

Oh- down and to the right.

not sure how that posted twice… oops.

Well of course, if you call 'em “manbags.” It just sounds so…so Dorcus.

I am mildly OC and tend to fidget with my pocket contents (typically: cel, pen(s), key wallet, wallet, mints, shades, eyedrops). Having all that stuff sliding and bouncing inside my clothes ooks me. So I began using this Wallet Bagg on days when I don’t need my messenger or brief bag. It’s pretty unobtrusive - sort of a half-size map case or shoulder-mounted fanny pack. Never one to shy from self-deprecating humor, I call it my Sissy Bag.

Damn link don’t work. Mine is black, not periwinkle.

Oh, how I miss the Seventies! I remember seeing some of those fashions in Playboy when I was in high school and in the service – I think Hef even wore a belted vest for several years! But the Dorcus web site is a spoof, right? Please tell me it’s a spoof!

Yup! Now, just make it Cordovan leather, and that’s what I carried 30 years ago in Aschaffenburg. Some of the even more fashionable guys wore 'em with shoulder “holster” straps, under the left arm – in case they needed to quick-draw their hooker cash, I guess.

I’m a woman who doesn’t carry a purse.

I keep my cell and keys in the right pocket, cigs and lighter in the left. Wallet in the back pocket.

If I’m dressed up I carry a purse. But I seem to have misplaced my purses when I moved…so last week when I went to a business meeting I put my keys in my teeny tiny womanly pants pocket and left the rest in my car.

Phone, cigarrettes and usually a lighter (if not there, my digital camera is filling in) in the left pocket, wallet, keys and maybe a lighter or rarely a knife in the right pocket. Nothing in the back pockets. On the rare occaisions that I wear a jacket (sportcoat type, not winter coat type) I’ll throw the smokes in the inside pocket of that.

Sporan

Keys, smokes and lighter in left pocket, cell and loose cash and change right pocket, wallet in right rear pocket. Nice and easy.

I absolutely loathe carring stuff in my hands. I have a large-ish (bigger than a woman’s handbag) traveller’s bag (think carry on luggage) which I hang off the back of my shoulder, and that can hold a lot of stuff - going to work, it’s usually a jacket, lunch, and reading material. However, if I can avoid carrying that I will, and normally I make use of my pockets beyond their design capabilities. Anything remotely valuable goes in my pockets, not the bag, so wallet, keys, coins… As Australia has coins up to $2 and as I’m lazy and always seem to just change a note rather than count up coins, I end up with my pockets weight down, and friends and relatives tell me the huge bulges out the side look stupid (but I still do it). My pocket linings don’t last.
