He “pretends” to begin understanding something just long enough for you guys to keep responding to him and then goes back to what he said originally. That particular thread is a train wreck with no survivors currently. Don’t feed him. Ignore him.
When I first saw the troll, I could see the line of thinking and knew it would only be a shortwhile before he started comparing gays to (insert X where X refers to either generally uncommon or generally unaccepted behaviour).
Don’t feed him. The longer you feed him the longer he will stay here. I was all up for really flaming him there and in this post but I know that will only be a justification for his existence. Rook = bad troll. Don’t feed him and he will go away or at least have time to think of what he is really saying and see the obvious flaws in everything he has said so far. Still, don’t post to that thread it feeds him.

PS. Satan, I think I know what you mean now. I don’t personally think Rook should be banned. Just educated some. I don’t consider him along the same lines as the sock puppet troll (which is old and boring) just the kind that is out to get a response and justification for backwards views. As of last night, when I realized the utter absurdity of explaining exactly why homosexuality and beastiality have nothing to do with each other, I decided to no longer post to that thread. There’s no point in educating when he doesn’t listen to a thing being argued. I’m all for letting it die.
I wasn’t here for the other trolls you mentioned - although I did just go find that Sentinel guy’s thread last night, which I found pretty funny. What a loser! I guess having read only the last thread of his I wasn’t around for the disruption prior to that, but you have to admit it’s pretty funny that he would start a thread about how everyone was ugly while avoiding posting his own photo.Then he claimed his irritating everyone was “research”! That was one of the funniest things I’ve read all week. He wants people to believe he’s keeping a list of everyone’s screen names and their psychological makeup, and then says that you guys are losers! Ha! That’s the pot calling the kettle beige…
Anyway, despite Rook’s complete stupidity, I find it soothing to tell him to fuck off occasionally, and that thread produced the following insult from KellyM, which I hope to use in the future:

I think I’m done posting there though, since he doesn’t read anything I say anyway. Plus he’s a fucking moron who can’t spell, which drives me batty.
As Sqrl and I discussed last weekend, I continue to post there because patient explanation of what’s wrong with his concepts sometimes seems to get through, and because there are other people around, lurkers, who may have the same preconceptions who are more willing to listen than Rook.
For a parallel, over on the Pizza Parlor is a moderator, Roblynn. Rob (the screen name is parallel to Tomndebb’s: portmanteau of a couple where the man uses it virtually all the time) is a heck of a nice guy: apparently an excellent and concerned father, devout, compassionate, sincere, and every so often giving the impression that he’s posting from one of Scylla’s alternate worlds, because what he thinks doesn’t match the planet we live on. Example recently from that homosexuality thread where I stuck my foot in my mouth about sexual addictions: “Nobody wants to make homosexuality illegal.” Uh, wanna run that by me again? In North Carolina, a couple of years ago, advocates from the religious right wanted to make it a capital crime. It’s still considered a felony here. He hasn’t responded to that yet, but this is a case where presenting the facts will get listened to. I think there are some here too who’ve had their eyes opened by some of the threads Esprix and Andygirl have started that I’ve participated in.

It has been evident to me since he began posting (is it still only on that thread?) that he writes something that makes it SEEM like he is learning and expands on those lines just long enough to get you guys hooked again and then goes back to where he was originally. I’m not necessarily concerned about convincing Rook one way or the other. I just hate to let his putdowns of gays and lesbians go unchallenged (“gays all come from dysfunctional families,” “homosexuality is immoral,” and so on). Mainly I worry that if Rook’s slurs about gays and lesbians are allowed to go entirely unchallenged, Rook himself or any other chance lurkers might get the idea that Rook’s ideas have some merit.
I figure, what the heck? As long as the thread is right here in front of me in the Pit (where I seem to do most of my posting anyway), I’ll just go once around the usual cycle of arguments with him. I just want to lay out the pro-gay side for him one time, as best I can, and see if he learns anything from the exercise. I’ll give it up once he and I start going back over the same old territory for the second or third time.

This is pretty much my viewpoint, too. But I’ve noticed that Rook doesn’t respond to any of my counter-arguements and now his “is beastiality immoral” question means he’s just trolling. He’s not interested in philosophy, he just wants to stir up the anthill.
As Esprix will (hopefully) back me up, I spotted him the second he started the OP. In fact, it was my admittedly loaded comments which got him to admit his true nature right off the bat.

I think I was thrown by my experience with Wildest Bill, who I at first thought was going to be a knee-jerk conservative but turned out to be a nice guy who starts some fun threads.

Actually, some of them can be quite amusing. When I first got here, a big ol’ thread with multiple personalities was going on. I don’t remember all the names, but it was some nice little FBI/Govt. manhunt and all. I’m still curious if UncleBeer ever got his $10,000…

p.p.s. I’m also sorry if I seem to be making light of the original situation (for those of you who DID figure out what I’m referring to). It was frightening when it happened, not only because some board members were physically threatened, but because if it was just one person orchestrating it all (as many postulated later) then it was significant of a very disturbing mental state. It could also, as ol’ Occam might say, have simply been a huge practical joke. So, I chuckle because it’s better then letting my skin crawl.
