GW2 finally has a release date!!!

GAME IS UP AND RUNNING RIGHT NOW!!!

Still didn’t get the names I wanted tho…

I have my names, but as I am playing on EU servers, I have ongoing connectivity problems.

Poot.
Just…poot.

Yeah, i made my characters at midnight and went to bed. I haven’t been able to login this morning at all.

I got home just before midnight last night and had time to log in, create a character, and run around the starting area for 5 minutes before I went to bed. We’re heading out to an event in just a few minutes…hopefully everything will be settled and I can get on for an hour or three this evening.

I’m a little curious as to how the game plays.

I’ve been watching videos, but it’s stilla little hard to follow. Basically, I want to know how kinetic the game is. Most MMO’s (OK, virtually all MMO’s) are basically PUSH BUTTONS. You ignore the game and push buttons until the enemy dies. Yes, there’s a lot of complications, but the focus is on the buttons. Quite frequently in WoW and SWTOR, I found myself ignoring the actual videos and just looking at my buttons, because the only important things were in my various hotbars at so forth at the bottom of the screen.

Sometimes I would have to move because a particular boss had an AoE or something. …Yay, I guess?

But basically, the game was a bunch of hotbars and shortcuts which you were supposed to memorize. You could basically get rid of all graphics and sound and you would arguably perform better - because that was only a distraction.

Many of the points in GW2 seem like all the stuff I like in SWTOR, but less obnoxious in-your-face. I like. Let me ask a few things:

(1) People seemed to move a lot mroe in this game. Is this useful or just something I see in videos, but isn’t really important?

(2) One thing I got annoyed with in SWTOR was the sheer longeivity in many enemies. I don’t really enjoy minute-long fights against trash. I’d honestly ratehr they do a lot more damage to me, and in return I can potentially kill them more quickly. Looking at video, that seems to be the case, but I’m mostly seeing starter zones. Do later battles become slogfests?

(3) I’d actuallly rather have fewer active abilities. How does GW2 handle this? I don’t exactly mind lots of abilities, but let’s face it: in most MMO’s, there’s immense overlap. How does it play in GW2? Can I concentrate on using a few skills effectively rather than trying to have four hotbars stuffed full for the five million variant options I need available every second?

  1. You have to keep moving. GW had that in PvP but not PvE. GW2 you have to move a lot or you will take damage and die. They also have a dodge feature that wasn’t in GW, but I don’t know if other MMOs have it.

  2. Unless you are fighting an enemy 2 or 3 levels above you most 1-1 fights are pretty quick. Bosses, of course, do take longer. I don’t know about higher levels because I never got over lvl 20 in the beta.

  3. GW2 has 10 skill slots, up from 8 in GW. The first 5 slots are tied to what ever weapons you have equipped. Each class can only use so many different types, but mixing main hand and off hand gives good variety. It is possible to unlock all the weapon skills when you are lvl 5, it isn’t a slog. 1 skill slot is reserved for a healing skill. You start with a basic one and can unlock a few others as you lvl up. The same with the other skill slots. You unlock the slots as you level up. At level 3 you will have 6 active slots. When you hit lvl 5 you get the 7th slot, and 8th at lvl 10. With a weapon swap, unlocked at lvl 7, you should be able to handle anything.

Two questions:

  1. I seem to have deleted the “Main” tab on my chat box. (The one labeled “combat” is still there.) How do I reset my chat box settings back to default?

  2. My leatherworking skill is lagging due to lack of raw resources. What is the best way to farm leather?

You can click by the chat tabs to add or remove channels. You should see a check box for Main.

You don’t farm leather you salvage it from various thing and you get a worn leather square or something like that. Those are the basic materials for leather farming.
At this point I think we should start a GW2 release thread and let this one die…

I do not.

That’s what I have been doing, but stuff (for me) seems to be dropping pretty slowly.

Then again, maybe it’s a feature, and not a bug. (They don’t want a player to level a skill faster than “x”.)

Collecting leather (and cloth for that matter) is pretty hit or miss. Some play sessions I end up with a ton, and sometimes hardly any at all. I’ve only tried the human and asura starting areas so far, but it seems killing bandits and centaur in the human area yields a pretty good supply for both cloth and leather.

There’s a large number of ways to progress through the asura starter-zone hearts without killing things, and I think that might have something to do with it. No killing = no loots! (and no weapon skills :frowning: )

I looked a little closer at the ‘Main’ chat channel. If you click add tab you get to check a bunch of unchecked boxes. Each new tab can be named, so you can call it ‘Main’ or whatever. The boxes that are checked on my ‘Main’ tab are guild, map, party, team and NPC. After it is set up you can add or remove checks to suit your self.
