i’ve seen “camping” used in discussions of games, and am wondering what it means, is it when a player in a FPS sits at a particular spot (usually weapons generating) and picks off other people? Or something more sinister (forcing Pac-Man in a tent with Mario and Sonic)
It’s the less-sinister one (that is, sitting in an easily defensible area with ammo/armor/health close to hand, and killing everyone who approaches you).
Camping refers to staying at a particular location where a given entity will “spawn”, i.e., be brought into existance at some point. This may be some computer controlled entity who will drop good loot once you drop him, or, more sinisterly, it might be the resurrection spot for a player. Repeatedly killing players that have just been resurrected is usually frowned upon by those who run said online games.
Usually with a sniper rifle or other weapon that prohibits others from coming close enough to hurt you.
It’s a term of derision, but I think it depends on the type of game being played and how the player goes about it.
Keen, that was the only thing i could think of, but you never know.
thanks, all!
I think it is also used in roleplaying games such as everquest where some high value item will appear at regular intervals (i.e. ring of fireballs, armor of holding, fruit of theloom or something like that )
Camping isnt always a bad thing. If you need to guard something like a flag, target or area, then it is required. In the non quake style FPS, there will always be a need for a few campers on a team. If they are good at it, you will get the 12 year olds that are used to jumping around with rocket packs on their backs shooting Redeemers at everybody crying “n00b quit camping”. These are the same people that, after a week or so of getting there asses handed to them, will go get a cheat or trainer.

I’ve been around for quite awhile…well gaming forever anyways. The ‘online’ game I’ve played with the biggest set of campers was “Myst, The fallen Lords”. Man, that was(is?) the best online game I’ve ever played and camping was prevalent. It(camping) was an actual strategy though for the first six months or so…then it was thrwarted easily. Most people who camp are newbies looking for some quick recognition. The way developers design games nowadays(most games anyways) it isn’t an option for long term survival.
It really depends on the game. In RPGs, for instance, certain monsters with that drop things may appear at regular intervals, so people will “camp out” so they get to the monster first.
There are several different kinds of camping. There’s spawn camping, where you camp near a spawn point. There’s regular camping, where you hide in a dark corner. And then there are people who say that snipers are campers. I disagree with them, but I wont bring that into this discussion.
