I am so in awe of anyone who can remember things. (Remind me not to argue with you.)
I’m relieved that you looked natural and pleasant and not at all snooty. Do you teach?

That’s an interesting question. No, I’ve never taught, though I guess I considered it once or twice.
Thanks for saying I looked natural, because I was really nervous.
I did see that you got all the Ohio questions.
Congrats to you. I enjoyed watching this round. Again, I am so envious.
And there was something I wanted to mention in my first post about the episode itself, more than your performance.
It was really interesting to have the bell at the moment you could ring in. This has always been one of those things that the audience just does not get a proper scope. I know you have to wait for Alex to finish reading, but sometimes it’s active right as he finishes the last word, sometimes a half-second delay. Thanks to Eddie’s accomodation, the entire audience could understand how lightning fast one has to be on the buzzers. Much of the time, it seemed like the ding was in response to somebody ringing in, not vice versa.
That was my first thought, but Hillary didn’t run in 2004 (a fact every NYer should know). So I ended up with the same answer as h.sapiens. Not that it would have mattered. I generally do pretty good playing along at home, but when they do the Tournaments, you gals are way out of my league.
Congrats, h.sapiens, on being one of the all-time bests. Condolences for your first round loss.
Well played h.sapeins! I didn’t get Final Jeopardy either–I guessed Fienstein.
These UToC games have been fantastic. The competition is awesome and the questions are harder. I like it!
Since you guys are talking about my senators, can somebody please tell me what the question was? I wonder if I’d have gotten it.
The category was 2004 United States Elections, and the question was something to the effect of “this woman received the third-most votes of any 2004 candidate for office.”
Yes, I had the 2000 and 2004 elections confused.
Good thing I declined the tournament invitation. Dodged a bullet, there.
Thanks, Marley. I probably wouldn’t have gotten it. Unless I randomly guessed Boxer, which I might. But it would be a stretch to think so.
I was surprised that I did. I realized it had to be one of the California women and I’ve been doing a lot of Senate-related work lately, but I was not positive it was her instead of Feinstein.
Yeah, I declined it, too. The invitation that starts with Johnny Gilbert saying, “If you would like to appear on ‘Jeopardy’…” I know they are looking for interesting people with good personalities who can question the answers, so to speak, and my personality starts out bad but turns to blank while I’m “in the zone.”
Congrats to anyone who’s ever made it onto the show, much less a Tournament of Champions.
I’ve tried for Jeopardy at two local auditions and once for the old Millionaire show. I always made it through the written questions without a hitch, but apparently I register a zero on the personality meter.
Which really hurts after seeing the personalities of a few of those who do make it on.
Interesting people?? Good personalities ?? I wonder how the hell I got on the program?
Once again - as with 5 time champ’s show - I watched, forgot you were on that day, and was totally oblivious to the fact that I was watching a doper :(.
You both registered with a solid positive on the personality side from where I was sitting. (In my living room, on the couch.)
But you raise a question I’ve been dying to have answered. Just how did you folks (and other Dopers that made it on air) get on the show? Was it through a local contestant search, or did you drop in the studio during one of the days they were auditioning?
I sent in a post card in response to an announcement of a local contestant search. They called me, I went to a hotel in downtown Chicago, and took the test. I guess I was pretty lucky to pass on my first try, because there were others at the same audition who had been back a few times.
My advice to anyone (especially women) who has a chance to try out is GO FOR IT! It’s a new experience and it’s fun, and really, what have you got to lose?
Almost the same thing for me, except I registered online. Took the test twice in Chicago & once in K.C., passed al three times. But was on the waiting list three seasons before they finally called me.
And to reiterate what h posted. If you have ever thought about it, take the test–especially if you are not a balding, bespectacled white guy like me. Too many of the contestants look like me.
An old friend of mine was in the UToC as well - Robert Slaven. Anyone know him? He’s on tonight.
My dignity as I pull a Cindy Brady and freeze up in front of the cameras, trying to come up with the words “Baton Rouge!”
