I just did this like last year but between the salt we use on our roads and how thin the metal is , it must have evaporated somewhat in the last couple of days. The result was this noise that I kept hearing , which was the muffler was slamming into the trunk.
On the sunfire , the exhaust is only attached at two places , the manifold and the hangar that holds the muffler unit. If unattended , I would have had to pick up the whole shebang, bring it into an exhaust place and have them reattach it for a pretty penny, some one told me close to 600 bucks , if the part that attaches to the manifold were to snap.
So 15 bucks for the new hangar and about 20 minutes worth of work for some reason , I think last year it only took me ten minutes from start to finish. The hangar has a loop that goes around the muffler and at the top has a rod that feeds through a rubber damper, the rubber damper attaches to the car through a piece of metal that has a maleable end that bends upwards.
The fun part was that the loop for the muffler was aftermarket and meant to fit a variety of cars , so it would not go on until I took the bold , nut and lock washer off and then even I could only get the two ends to come within 3 inches of each other. So I had to use a hydro jack to lift the muffler up and take some tension off the loop, once that was done, the bolt and nut combo went on in ten seconds and had it tightened a few seconds later.
Next project is rear shocks and brakes
