Hah, stupid punk-ass kids, you picked on the wrong lock, LOSERS!

tonight there was a potentially unpleasant message on my answering machine, it seems there were some (exact numbers unknown, two at least) snot-nosed punk-ass kids who snuck into the storage unit complex where i rent a storage unit, and proceeded to go on a lock-cutting spree, they breached about 40 units, simply cutting the locks off, apparently nothing has been stolen (so far)…

anyway, the message on my machine said they had TRIED to cut the lock off my unit, tried…and failed miserably, the lock still held, but they reccomend replacing it because the shank looked like it had a crack in it…

so i grabbed the lock from my Master Street Links bicycle security chain to temporarily use until i can get a new lock tomorrow…

the old lock was a Master 911 Industrial lock, dual ball-bearing locks, boron hardened alloy shank, one step below their top-line 931 (same lock, but with a steel shroud over the shank), and the lock on the bike chain is a 931, but with a black body instead of industrial yellow

i go down to the storage unit, and when i unlock the lock, i have to laugh, as the lock was barely scratched, there are 2 jaw marks from the bolt cutters, and a scratch (which is what looked like the “crack” in poor lighting) in the chrome paint where the punks got frustrated and tried a different angle/prying

i could probably still use the lock, it looks relatively undamaged, i’ll replace it anyway, just to be on the safe side, but it goes to show that Master Lock does deserve it’s reputation, i’m sold on Master locks for good now, they have a lifetime customer

i just hope they catch the stupid little punks, i’d love to give them a good pummeling for their little prank, they should count themselves lucky i’m not a judge, as they’d be serving hard time in the meanest prison i could find, they better hope they never come up against my zero tolerance policy on crime/attempted crime

Any doper locksmiths out there, is the lock still usable, or since it’s suffered a cutting attempt, should i replace it?

Not a locksmith, but I would avoid using any lock with any visible signs of damage. In case something does happen and you need to make a police report/insurance claim it looks better if you made every apparent attempt to keep your stuff safe.

Whatcha got in that unit that it needs a lock like that? It’s a human head isn’t it? A HUMAN HEAD IN A GLASS JAR!! YOU FREAK!!

God, that’s why I moved to the end of nowhere. Stuff like that creeps me out. Didn’t they have surveillence cameras?

Um… how’d they get your number?

This would worry me, a bit.

Uh, FinnAgain? I don’t think the KIDS called to tell him about their crime spree. The storage facility management would have his number because he gave it to them.

First time I read it I though the same thing. :o

Well, erm, that makes more sense then.

The way I read it he got a phone call from people who sounded like kids who might’ve broken into the storage office and gotten their records and then started calling people to taunt them.

nope, the storage unit manager called me, she told me about the break-in / attempted break-in

i checked the lock they reccomend on the Master website (the round silver one) and yes, it is harder to cut off than a standard padlock, but it has a standard hardened shackle, the 911/931 have a Boron alloy shank that’s even tougher

the only advantage this lock has over the 911/931 is the shrouded shackle

[url=http://masterlock.com/cgi-bin/product_detail.pl?sub_cat_id=D931&template=style]the 931 adds a shroud over the shackle (a thick steel shroud and has the strongest shackle (Boron alloy), it’s stronger than the D40 Disc, and considering the only reason the punks couldn’t get the D40’s off was because of the shrouded shackle, i think the 931 would be a better bet

the storage unit manager reccomends the D40, but i think i’ll go with the 931, just as secure as the D40 (in fact it’s more secure, thicker shroud and all, when it’s locked in place, the lock does not move it sticks out horizontally and the only way to remove it is to use the key, there’s NO space to get any form of cutting/prying tool in there

as to what i’m storing in the unit, just stuff, stuff from the apartment that doesn’t fit in my current place (smaller apartment), but the fact remains is that it’s MY stuff, dammit, no snot-nosed punk-ass thieves are going to get my stuff, not if I have any say in the matter…

besides, i just like annoying criminals, and making their life of crime as tough as possible, heh, even if they did breach the storage unit, there’s nothing in there worth stealing, my ratty old home theatre rack, a computer desk, a mattress and box-spring, a vaccum, some misc. small appliances, nothing any snot-nosed brat would want, all the good stuff is in my current apartment, nice and safe
