My buddy broke the key to my storage unit padlock which I should have seen coming considering this oh so reliable " American" made hardened steel padlock was purhased at the all.American storage in the first place. I shoulda known I’d get ripped.off somehow. So my cheap key broke off inside the.lock …now lady says 20 bucks to saw.off the ten dollar lock she sold me. I say.there’s a cheaper way. I’ve got plenty of options on saws and dremels to get the job done. Is anyone out there that can tell me from experience which side to saw first on the brinks.hardened steel circle padlock medium size. I know that I spent four hours sawing one off months ago I forget.which side I.chose out of luck to saw …luckily it was the right choice. Also the lock itself will be tricky to even reach the correct spot to saw cuz of the way its placed on my storage unit door and wedged into the stupidly made door lock. So any advice on picking the lock or any other solutions?
I really don’t think we should tell you how to break into a unit we have no proof you have a right to get into.

Since you need opinions, let’s move this from General Questions to IMHO.

No help for your situation, but I do have a question for you. What do you think the purpose in writing is of that nifty little “.”?
Maybe I do have some help for you after all. The $20 is a service fee for the facility manager to remove the lock quickly, usually by using a bolt cutter instead of a saw. If you buy into the idea of “time = money” then you might reconsider how cheap using a hacksaw yourself on the lock is. By the way, the door lock is made the way it is to keep Joe Random from taking a minute or two to saw off the locks on the doors of other people’s storage units. Get a good strong lock of a make approved by the facility (What? The lock has to be a particular kind? Yep, in many places, that’s the case. Liablility issues, you know, such as Joe Random’s stunt.), pay the $20 to the manager (who will require you to prove that you are authorized access to the unit) to have the lock’s bolt cut, and tell your friend to never again touch any of your stuff since (s)he apparently has the Sadim touch.
Is the key broken off in the lock? If not, do you still have the broken key?
If the key’s broken off in the lock, you might be able to just use a screwdriver to turn the mechanism.
You sure you want my advice? After all, I’m “American-made.”
But, do you cost more than $10?
