I want to pay homage to #4 today. Specifically, Bill Simmons, the Sports Guy. His Page 2 columns are the stuff of genious. He makes me laugh out loud in nearly every column…and he writes about sports for gods sake. I love this man and I want his job. The impetus for this thread was something I read today while browsing his archives (yes, I really should be working…). Curiously it wasn;t really something he wrote that I loved so much, it was a submission to his mailbag here
Come on, how can you not think that hilarious? [sub]…maybe its just me.[/sub]
Maybe its because he’s a shameless Boston Sports fan, and I somehow relate being a Cubs fan…he seems to always preface his rantings with “only a Cubs fan could understand”.
He likes to quote movies, and relishes bad sports movies for their sheer badness. Loves watching them in a train wreck sort of way. I relate to this.
He likes to screw with his friends, and understands the true beauty of trash talk about nearly every subject. I’m telling you now, this is good clean, all-american fun.
He is so damn funny. I liked his column about things he’s learned from the Red Sox–that you can have a centerfielder who’s completely wacko so long as nobody makes eye contact with him; that it’s ok to have a general manager who looks like a serial killer (the Dan Duquette era); and it’s bad to have a coaching staff with matching mustaches and ray-bans, looking like the cast of an all-male porn movie (the Kevin Kennedy era) . . .
I just stumbled across this guy earlier this week looking for someone else. He is wild, a bit over the top in that “jawing with the guys” kind of way. I hope his editors never try and rein him in. What day does his column come out, Monday, Tuesday?
