My girls have both been growing their hair out. One is now a little past shoulder length (she has smooth, shiny, thick hair) and one has hair about halfway down her back (very thick, tangly, almost-curly mane). I can put hair into two braids, and I can do what we call ‘princess braids,’ (two small front braids joined at the back) but that’s about it.
So, oh braiding Dopers, give me your favorite hairdo websites! I’m not really all that good with my own hair, so assume I need really good instructions. While I like to look at those really fancy Ren Fair styles, there is no way that I can actually do them, so please warn me about those. Thanks for any help you can give this hair-impaired mom!
One site I can recommend is a blog called Beautiful Long Hair. The four-strand braid on the first page of the blog is great, and there are many other braids, buns, and other long hair styles throughout the blog. Some even have video instructions (a godsend for a klutz like me).
Long Hair Loom. Scroll down to the “Braids” section. It has instructions for rope braids (the only braid I can manage to do on my own hair!), 4 strand braid, traditional braid, French braid, plus variations on all the above. And when you get tired of braiding, you can try out the various buns, twists, and pony tails!
Thanks! I tried a French braid on my older kid, and it came out OK for a first try. Younger kid won’t let me near her.
Keep 'em coming!
Oh, and here’s a dumb question. I see pretty pictures of braids with ribbon in them. How do you get the ribbon to stick in the top of the braid so you can do that?
(Yes, I am a hair idiot. Earlier, my husband suggested I ask my mom, maybe she knows about braids! I laughed a lot. Because even though my mom has always had very long hippie hair, she can’t do a thing with it except a plain braid. We are all hair-impaired in my family.)
