Hair-conscious people: I need a good conditioner

Former Vidal Sassoon model checking in…

If your hair is as fried as you say it is, you would really benefit from a good cut. Take off as much length as you can stand.

I third the suggestion to get good quality conditioners. Skimp on the shampoo, splurge on conditioner and product.

Speaking of product, try to avoid anything with alot of alcohol. It tends to dry out “sensitive” hair. That also goes for spraying perfume on your hair.

Leave in conditioner is your friend. Use it on top of your usual hair washing routine. If your hair has real issues, carry a bottle of the spray kind around and use as needed.

If nothing else is working and you want to go hard core, hair oil/serum can be a solution. I recommend Phytoplage Phyto-Oil, Biosilk Silk Therapy (can turn the most hellacious frizzies into luscious curls) or good old Murray’s pomade.

I would also suggest checking out products that are usually marketed to the African American community. They are all about dry hair.

Hope this helps!

Sally’s Beauty Supply carries knockoffs of many of the pricey salon brands, including Paul Mitchell. They are labeled “Generic” at the top and are packaged in plain brown and white bottles. They also have knockoffs of the Aveda salon brand under the “Aura” name, in very similar packaging. All of the above run less than $5 for the regular-size bottles, so it’s not insanely expensive to experiment. To me, they are indistinguishable from the salon product, and I’ve tried all kinds.

Of the drugstore brands, I like Aussie Moist rinse-out conditioner, and 3-Minute Miracle deep conditioning treatment for occasional use (once a week or so). If you have access to a sauna or steam room, try putting the conditioner on before you go in, with a shower cap over it. It’s amazing! I also second the recommendation for leave-in conditioner as an addition to your routine; I like both the Aura generic and the brown-and-white bottle generic knockoff of Sebastian Potion 9. And my hair definnitely has a mind of its own if I let it.

I second that.

Having baby fine hair that gets colored monthly, I am a conditioner addict. I’ve had great results with the Feria and Infusium for colored hair.
